Luke 3:1-20
ADVANCE MAN
IN STEP WITH THE MASTER Lesson #7 in the Gospel of Luke
What does an advance man do?
How have you served as an advance man for someone else? How did you make his or her way easier?
Lukes nativity narrative, as extensive as it is, comes to end. It was time for Gods advance man, John the Baptist, to make his appearance. In this portion of Scripture we see Johns ministry of preparing the Jewish people for the arrival of their Messiah.
JOHNS CONTEMPORARIES Vss. 1-2
· Johns time in the limelight was brief. Why?
· The most significant information in these two verses is found at the end. the Word of God came to John Why is this statement important? In what ways should the Word of God come to us?
· The rest of these two verses tell us something about the time frame of Johns arrival and the political and spiritual conditions that he faced.
· The fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar was sometime between 27-29 A.D. Pontius Pilates official title was perfect. He ruled in Judea. Herod and his brother Phillip were tetrarchs, ruling over 1/3 each of their fathers (Herod the Great) former kingdom. Little is known of Lysanias.
· Although, technically speaking, there was only one High Priest, Annas was a former high priest who was succeeded by several of his sons and his son in-law Caiaphas. Annas was probably referred to as a high priest because of the power he still exerted on the priesthood. The family of Annas was in control over the temple, and had great influence on the Jewish people.
JOHN'S CHALLENGE - Vss. 3-9
1. Purposeful - Vs. 3 - He preached a baptism of repentance, preparing people for the coming Messiah.
· Repentance is a change of mind. Repentance involves sorrow and confession of sins. 2 Corinthians 7:10, James 4:8-10
· Why is repentance necessary for salvation? 1 Thessalonians 1:10
· A person who truly repents and turns to Christ is forgiven of his sins. Romans 5:1, 9, Ephesians 2:8-9
· Johns baptism was a baptism of repentance, looking ahead to the coming Messiah.
· Believers baptism looks back at the finished work of Christ. Romans 6:1-4
· How and why is repentance an ongoing activity for the believer? Matthew 5:3-4
· Scripture and my own experience have taught me that an ongoing spirit of repentance repenting not only of overt sins, but of unbelief, negative attitudes, self-centeredness, moral omissions is not only a sign of salvation but is a necessity for spiritual health. R. Kent Hughes, Preaching the Word, Luke Volume 1- That You May Know the Truth, (Wheaton, Illinois, Crossway Books, 1998) p. 109
2. Prophetic - Vss. 4-6 - His coming had been predicted in the Old Testament. Isaiah 40:3-5
· Luke was quoting from Isaiah 40:3-5. It is a picture of a messenger going ahead of a coming king and getting the roads in good condition for his soon arrival.
· How did these verses apply figuratively to Israel? How do they apply to us?
· If the evangelical church today would repent of its individual and corporate sins its materialism, its insularity, its lovelessness a highway would be forged to a lost world, and many would repent and come to Christ. Hughes, p. 110
3. Practical - Vss. 7-9 - John was looking for "fruit" that repentance had taken place. He also warned of coming judgment.
· Vs. 7 & Matthew 3:7 - Was John being cruel or vindictive when he called those who came for Baptism a brood of poisonous snakes? Why did he do so?
· Vs. 8 - Many in the crowd thought that their association with Abraham made them partakers of Gods covenant with him. God could raise up children for Abraham out of stones if he wanted to. Instead of having a false security in their relationship with Abraham, they were to show fruit worthy of repentance.
· How do Christians today make the same mistake? Matthew 7:21, Galatians 3:26-29
· Vs. 9 is a sobering warning. Why does our generation need this same warning? Revelation 20:15
JOHN'S CLARIFICATION - Vss. 10-14
· Vs. 10 There were those in the crowd who were truly convicted. They wanted to know what they should do. It is a good sign when people want to truly know how they can change.
· Note that all of Johns answers involve money in some way. Why? 1 Timothy 6:10, Matthew 6:24
1. People in general were to share - Vss. 10-11
· What would happen if Christians literally followed this procedure?
2. Publicans (tax collectors) were to be honest - Vss. 12-13
· Tax or toll collectors bid on a territory and paid Rome the taxes in advance. Whatever they collected above what Rome wanted was their profit.
· The tax collector was to only take what was rightfully his. How does this apply to us who are not tax collectors?
3. Soldiers were not to be violent, or accuse falsely, and be content with their wages. - Vs 14.
· The soldiers here could have been Roman soldiers or those under Herod. They were not well paid.
· Why would a soldier ever use excessive violence or falsely accuse?
· What keeps us from being content with our wages?
JOHN'S CHAMPION - Vss. 15-18
· Vs. 15 Why would people begin to speculate that John was the Messiah?
· Vs. 16 John baptized with water but there was one mightier than John coming. The same services a slave performed for his master were to be performed by a disciple for his teacher except unloosing the thong on his sandals. If John was not worthy, where does that put us?
· Jesus baptism was superior to Johns. His baptism is with the Spirit and fire. With the Holy Spirit comes the fire! Acts 2:1-4
· Vs. 17 - Notice the differences between this verse and the previous verse. There will either be baptism by the Spirit or the banishment of eternal judgment. Each person will be gathered into the barn as part of the harvest or burned in the fire.
· Vs. 18 We do not have all of Johns words, but we know that John didnt mince words. Jesus was Johns champion. In light of this passage, how do we know when He is our champion?
JOHNS CONFINEMENT Vss. 19-20
· John had much to say about the sins of Herod, especially his marriage to his brothers wife. Evidently Herod and Herodias left their original mates in order to marry each other.
· Johns outspokenness got him put in jail. When should we be outspoken about the sins of others and when should we remain silent?

1 John 2:6
GODLINESS WALKING AS HE WALKED
CHRISTIAN CHARACTER CLINIC #9
In the Gospels God has an image of Godliness. He says Here is my Son. This is what he is like. Be like Him. And like the lady who was trying to conform to the image on the mirror, we are to live Godly lives by conforming to the image or likeness of our Savior, God the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
We are continuing our study of the Christian Character Traits as described in 2 Peter 1:5-7.
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. (NKJV)
Out of perseverance is to flow godliness.
John MacArthur says of this word godliness, The Greek term he employs means piety, or reverence. It speaks of conduct, belief, and speech that is harmonious with the character of God and honoring to Him. John MacArthur, The Quest for Character, (Nashville TN, J. Countryman, 2006), p. 66
In other words, if we are going to be Godly, we need to learn to have some of the same qualities He does.
Our theme for this morning's message is 1 John 2:6 - He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
God has given us a human/divine role model to follow, that is, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If we are going to be Godly we need to learn to follow His example, that is, to walk as He walked.
If we claim to have Christ in our lives as Christians, and that we abiding in Christ, we need to emulate him, walking as He walked!
My challenge to you this morning is, in order to be Godly, "walk as He walked."
I want to give you a few examples to get you started in imitating the Lord Jesus, walking as He walked, and thus developing Godliness. You will find more examples as you personally study the Gospel. We will take all our examples from Matthew, as we show some of the examples of Jesus that we should follow.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
Note first of all,
JESUS WAS BAPTIZED. YOU SHOULD BE BAPTIZED Matthew 3:13-17
John the Baptist knew that that Jesus was righteous.
John the Baptist was baptizing with a baptism symbolic for repentance of sin. Jesus had no reason to repent.
Vs. 15 - In order for Jesus to fulfill all righteousness, that is, all God the Father wanted Him to do, He had to be baptized.
In baptism He was identifying Himself with us, those who are sinners in need of repentance. He was coming to our level of need.
Baptism is symbolic for death, burial and resurrection. Check out Romans 6 sometime. Our Lord Jesus would go on to die for us, be buried, and rise again.
So what about baptism today?
Jesus was baptized, YOU should be baptized.
Jesus was baptized at an age he knew what he was doing.
You should be baptized at an age you know what you are doing.
Jesus did it to fulfill all righteousness.
We do it because it is something God wants us to do. We are doing what is right in the eyes of God.
Matthew 28:19 - Go ye therefore, and teach all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
In the Great Commission Jesus tells us to make disciples.
We are to bring them to faith in Christ and then baptize them.
The pattern in the book of Acts was belief in Christ followed by baptism.
One example is found in Acts 10. Peter was sent to a Gentile named Cornelius. Cornelius gathered together his close friends and relatives. Peter preached the Gospel to them.
Before Peter stopped preaching, the Holy Spirit came upon them, giving evidence that they had believed on Christ.
Acts 10:47-48
Notice, Peter commanded them to be baptized! It wasn't a suggestion. It was a command! In the early New Testament church, if you were saved, you were baptized!
Baptism does not get you into Heaven.
Belief in Christ saves you.
Baptism is your testimony that you are going to Heaven.
Baptism is the first step of obedience in the Christian Life.
Baptism is your way of saying that you trust Christ as your Savior.
He identified himself with us through Baptism. We are to identify with Him through Baptism.
JESUS RESISTED SIN. YOU SHOULD RESIST SIN Matthew 4:1-11
Immediately following the Baptism of our Lord, was the temptation of our Lord.
He is sinless, and of course, though tempted came through this test having resisted sin.
Vss. 1-3 - He had fasted for 40 days, and Satan came to tempt Him. The first temptation was to do what Jesus could have done as God. He was tempted to make bread out of stones.
Why would it have been wrong for Jesus to make bread?
First, in Vs. 1, He had been led by the Spirit of God. He was without bread because God planned it that way.
Secondly, to make bread would have meant following the devil's directions instead of God's. Therefore Jesus refused.
Vs. 4 - Jesus quoted Scripture and resisted sin.
Vss. 5-6 - Jesus is taken up to the top of the temple and invited to jump off. Satan quotes Scripture about God protecting Him.
Vs. 7 - Jesus refused. He resisted, again quoting Scripture! For Jesus to jump off the top of the temple would have tested or tempted God!
This would be something like you and I jumping out in front of a car just to see if God would protect us or not, or thinking, I will sin, confess, and God will forgive. That is tempting God.
Vss. 8-9 - Jesus is taken to a mountain. Satan shows Him all the kingdoms of the world. He offers them to Jesus, if He will but worship the devil. Jesus would have none of it.
Satan was offering Jesus a kingdom without going to the cross!
Vs. 10 - Jesus tells Satan to leave! And Again He quotes Scripture.
We are to walk as He walked. And although we as Christians are not sinless, we are to resist sin.
God knows that we cannot do it without help. 1 Corinthians 10:13
When we are tempted, we are to ask for and look for God's way of escape. And if Jesus quoted Scripture when tempted, we should also quote Scripture.
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
JESUS WAS WILLING TO SERVE. YOU SHOULD BE WILLING TO SERVE. Matthew 8:1-4
In Vss. 1-4, a leper, a desperately sick man with a disease that was disgusting to look upon, come to Jesus.
Vs. 2 - He comes to Jesus and worships.
Then he says, "Lord, if you will, you can make me clean."
In essence, this poor leper was asking Jesus for service, the service of healing.
As you go through life, people will ask you to serve. They might say, "If you will, you can
Teach Sunday School.
Serve as a deacon.
Help in the nursery
Assist with a project
Do someone a favor
Share your faith
Give to missions
Sing in the choir
Present special music
Run an errand
Service can take many different forms, based on the abilities and gifts with which God has blessed us.
Vs. 3 - In Jesus' case, He was asked to serve, and he said "I will".
How do we answer when we are asked to serve?
Do we say, "I will", or do we make all sorts of excuses for not serving others?
All through life Jesus served.
He served by healing many.
He served by feeding the 5,000.
He served through His teaching and preaching ministries.
He served by washing the feet of the disciples.
His ultimate act of service was going to the cross where he died for your sins. Matthew 20:27-28, Galatians 6:10
How do you follow the example of the Lord Jesus through service?
When Jesus found something that needed to be done He did it!
Find something that needs to be done and do it! Now you may not think this to be Godliness, but when you serve others, you are imitating God the Son. You are reverencing God when you serve with the right attitude!
He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
JESUS PLEASED THE FATHER. YOU SHOULD PLEASE THE FATHER. MATTHEW 17:1-5
Take note of Vs. 5. God is saying here, " I am well pleased with my son."
There wasn't a single thing that Jesus did to displease the Father.
There wasn't an action.
There was an attitude.
There wasn't a word that displeased our Heavenly Father.
If we are going to walk as Jesus walked, we should be concerned that we are pleasing our Heavenly Father in all we say, think and do!
The question we need to ask before we do anything is, "WILL THIS PLEASE MY HEAVENLY FATHER."
Another good question to ask - "IF I COULD SEE JESUS STANDING IN FRONT OF ME RIGHT NOW, WOULD I DO THIS ACTIVITY? If the answer is no, don't do it.
JESUS CHRIST PRACTICED FAITH. YOU SHOULD PRACTICE FAITH - Matthew 17:14-21
After Jesus comes off the mountain, He discovers that His disciples are having trouble casting out a demon.
Read Vss. 14-17 - He calls them a "faithless and perverse generation".
Vss. 18-19 - Jesus rebuked the demon and the boy was cured. Later, the disciples asked why they couldn't cast out the demon.
Vs. 20 - The answer is very clear. It was their lack of faith.
Just a little faith will move mountains.
Jesus acted in faith. He said something and it was done.
Hebrews 11:6 - But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Our faith should be based on seeking God in His Word and prayer, praying according to His will, acting according to His will, and believing that He will work in and through us.
More would be accomplished if we believed God!
JESUS HAD COMPASSION. YOU SHOULD HAVE COMPASSION. Matthew 20:29-34
Read Matthew 20:29-34
So what motivates you and I to witness?
What motivates you and I to do good works?
What motivates you and I to listen to others?
What motivates you and I to reach out to people in need?
One of the motives Jesus had was compassion.
Jesus truly cared what happened to those around Him.
That's why He healed these blind men.
That's why He went to the cross.
He had compassion on you!
That's why He sits in Heaven interceding for you!
He has compassion.
You and I, to walk as Jesus walked must have compassion on others.
When your neighbor sees you care, he will want to know more about Christ.
When other Christians see you care, they will be comforted, encouraged and strengthened, and more willing to care themselves.
As I review my own life, I can ask, where would I be without people showing me compassion?
Jesus demonstrated compassion.
You have received compassion.
To whom should you show compassion?
We are to spend our lives as Christians reverencing God. We show reverence towards Him when we strive to live the way God the Son lived.
1 John 2:6 - He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
JESUS CHRIST WAS BAPTIZED. YOU SHOULD BE BAPTIZED.
JESUS CHRIST RESISTED SIN. YOU SHOULD RESIST SIN.
JESUS CHRIST SERVED. YOU SHOULD SERVE.
JESUS CHRIST PLEASED THE FATHER YOU SHOULD PLEASE THE FATHER.
JESUS CHRIST PRACTICED FAITH. YOU SHOULD PRACTICE FAITH
JESUS CHRIST HAD COMPASSION. YOU SHOULD HAVE COMPASSION.

1 Samuel 17
THE GIANT
Vs. 1 - Imagine waking up one morning and discovering that there is an invading army in your country ready to attack. A similar thing happened to King Saul and the nation Israel. One day the Philistines moved into Israeli territory and set up camp! They were there to invade Israel.
Vss. 2-3 -Word came to King Saul, who mustered his army and went down to the same valley and set up for battle against the Philistines. They were on opposite mountains from each other with a valley in between.
Vss. 4-7 - It appears that there was little or no action between the two armies until a giant named Goliath appears. He was big and their best warrior. He was their champion! This guy with all his height, equipment and power stood out in the valley and began to yell a challenge to the Israeli army.
Vss. 8-10 - The giant called for one warrior from Israel to come out and fight him in a "winner take all" match.
Vs. 11 - The response of King Saul and the Israelites was fear and dismay.
Vs. 16 - This intimidation went on for 40 days.
Such was the impact of the GIANT!
Do you have any giants in your life? Is there a habit, a sin, a person, a situation that is bullying you around and taking control of your life? It could be worry, smoking, cursing, gossip, alcohol, bad temper, illicit sex, or a bad influence. There are many giants who might try to dominate you.
It could be that these giants have been harassing your for so long, that you have given up hope of ever being delivered from their influence.
If you have such a giant in your life, you can be sympathetic towards Saul and the men of Israel. They needed help.
They needed deliverance
They needed a champion greater than the giant they faced!
Perhaps today, you need help. You need deliverance. You need a champion greater than the giant that you face.
LET ME TELL YOU FROM THE BEGINNING THAT THE CHAMPION OF ISRAEL WAS NOT DAVID! David was just an instrument in the hands of Israel's champion. ISRAEL'S CHAMPION WAS THE LORD OF HOSTS! Vs. 45
Your champion against the giants in your life is also the Lord of Hosts!
THE ENEMY IS REAL - Vss. 4-7, 33
Goliath was a real person. Goliath was big (10 feet tall), strong, and dangerous!
Our enemy is real too. His Name is Satan. Isaiah 14:12-15
He caused Eve to fall in the Garden. Genesis 3
He is the Father of lies. John 8:44, 2 Corinthians 11:14-15
He is powerful. Ephesians 6:12, 1 Peter 5:8
THE STAKES ARE HIGH! Vss. 8-11
Much was at stake when Goliath came out and taunted Israel.
The personal integrity of every soldier was at stake.
The integrity of the nation was at stake.
God's integrity was at stake. Vs. 26
Much is at stake when giants torment you.
Personal integrity is at stake.
Church integrity is at stake.
God's integrity is at stake. He is your God. Giving in to a "giant" implies that God is not strong enough to deliver you.
THE BATTLE IS THE LORD'S! Vss. 20-37
David arrived to see Goliath at work taunting Israel.
Vss. 23-26 - David wanted to know the reward for defeating Goliath. He realized that Goliath had no right to "defy the armies of the living God."
Satan has no right to defy us who are God's children. Victory over Satan was won at the cross. Romans 6:10-14, Galatians 2:20
Vss. 32-37 - David appears before Saul and confidently announces that God will give him the victory!
THE VICTORY IS GOD'S! Vss. 38-54
Vs. 45 - David confronted the giant in the name of his God.
Let us confront our giants in the name of the Lord Jesus!
As we trust Him, he will give the strength to defeat any giant. Philippians 4:13
Ultimately, God gave the victory!

Proverbs 3:5-10
THE GOOD LIFE
Most people consider the "good life" a life of wealth and prosperity. The good life is actually living in such a way that God is pleased and blesses in return.
LEAN ON THE LORD - Vs. 5
LEARN FROM THE LORD - Vs. 6 - Acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path.
LIVE FOR THE LORD - Vss. 7-8
LEND TO THE LORD - Vss. 9-10 - In a sense giving to the Lord is a loan. He always rewards those who are faithful to Him. That reward may not appear in it's fullness until the Judgment Seat of Christ.
*************************************************************************
John 4:31-38
EVANGELISM
In our day and age people want to be left alone concerning religion, even though they are in need of a relationship with Christ (John 3:36). Jesus' plan however is far different than the initial reaction people often give when they feel that someone wants to convert them to faith in Christ. Jesus wants us as disciples to be those actively involved in evangelism. As we work at winning souls we will discover that indeed there are people who are ready to come to Christ.
WHAT'S ESSENTIAL? - Vss. 31-34 - Doing God's will and finishing God's work is more important than even eating. When Jesus made this statement he had just finished talking to the "woman at the well" about her soul.
WHAT'S EVIDENT? - Vs. 35 - The harvest is evident. Look around you and you will see people who are in great need for Christ.
WHAT'S EVALUATED? - Vs. 36 - Those who labor at bringing people to Christ will be rewarded.
Daniel 12:3, 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
WHAT'S EXPECTED? - Vss. 37-38 - We are expected to reap. Matthew 28:19-20, Mark 16:15, Acts 1:8
************************************************************************************
Acts 6:1-8
LEADERS AT WORK
One of the jobs of leaders is to handle difficulties as they come along.
One of the problems leaders have is solving difficulties without getting themselves distracted from what God has called them to do. Often leaders can solve problems by doing things themselves and robbing time from other important tasks. The Apostles solved a major problem in Acts 6:1-8 without being taken from the jobs which God had given them.
DIFFICULTY IN THE FELLOWSHIP - Vs. 1
There were two groups of Jewish believers in the early church.
The "Hebrews" were the Palestinian Jews who grew up in the land of Palestine.
The "Grecians" were the Hellenistic Jews who grew up in other parts of the world.
The early church supported widows. The Grecians felt that their widows were not being properly taken care of.
DISTRACTION FROM THE WORK - Vs. 2
The Apostles saw the potential for distraction. Their main ministry was the Word of God.
It would not make sense for them to leave their important ministry to do something that others could just as easily do. Proper care of the widows was important, but others could do it.
Leaders must remember to do the most important things that God has called them to do, and to let others have part in ministry as well.
DECISION OF THE APOSTLES - Vs. 3
The first deacons were to be appointed.
They were to be men of good reputation, full of the Holy Ghost, and full of wisdom.
DETERMINATION FOR MINISTRY - Vs. 4
The Apostles were determined to stick with their most important ministries, which were the preaching of the Word and prayer.
DEPLOYMENT OF DEACONS - Vss. 5-6
The deacons were elected and deployed by the Apostles.
DESCRIPTION OF GROWTH - Vss. 7-8
There was peace in the church.
The Word of God increased and so did the number of Apostles.
Stephen "...did great wonders and miracles among the people."
************************************************************************************
IT'S TIME TO PRAY!
THE PATTERN FOR PRAYER - Vss. 13-16a
Many people carry penknives in their pockets. The penknife has many uses. It can punch a hole, make a slice, trim a piece of wood, cut a rope or string. Those who have penknives can find innumerable uses for them.
Prayer is like a penknife. It is helpful in so many different ways.
There are different prayer patterns for different situations.
If a person is afflicted, he is to pray. Vs. 13
If a person is happy or merry, he is to praise ("sing psalms"). Vs. 14
If he is sick he is to call for the church leaders to come, pray, confess and anoint. Vss. 14-16a
THE PROMISE OF ANSWERED PRAYER - Vs. 16b
THE PROTOTYPE (MODEL) OF A PRAYER WARRIOR - Vss. 17-18

Luke 3:1-20
ADVANCE MAN
IN STEP WITH THE MASTER Lesson #7 in the Gospel of Luke
What does an advance man do?
How have you served as an advance man for someone else? How did you make his or her way easier?
Lukes nativity narrative, as extensive as it is, comes to end. It was time for Gods advance man, John the Baptist, to make his appearance. In this portion of Scripture we see Johns ministry of preparing the Jewish people for the arrival of their Messiah.
JOHNS CONTEMPORARIES Vss. 1-2
