MEET THE APOSTLES

IN STEP WITH THE MASTER – LESSON #12 – Studies in Luke

ü  If you could be one of the disciples, which one would you choose to be?

ü  What is your understanding of what an apostle is?

ü  Why were the Apostles so important? 1 Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 2:19-20, 4:11-12, Hebrews 2:1-4

ü  Why is it important that we learn about the identity of the Apostles?

This brief passage introduces us to the original 12 Apostles. Although there is not a lot of information about most of them, it is still important to get somewhat of an idea of who these people were.

INTRODUCTION – Vss. 12-13

·        Vs. 12 – Why would Jesus spend a whole night in prayer before choosing the Apostles?

·        The pattern of Jesus’ life was that of prayer. Luke 5:16, 11:1, Luke 22:39-45, John 17

·        As disciples of Jesus, what should our prayer habits be? Luke 11:1-13, 18:1-8, Mark 13:32-36, John 15:7

·        Vs. 13 – A disciple is simply a learner or an adherent. Out of what was probably a good number of disciples, Jesus chose the Apostles.

·        An apostle is usually defined as “one sent”. He was more than a messenger. He was an official representative or an ambassador. He spoke with authority on behalf the one who sent him.

·        The Apostles were not scholars or what we would call “the cream of the crop”.  Mostly all were from Galilee and many of them were fishermen. They were a collection of “nobodies”.  How should that encourage us? 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

·        Mark 3:14 - Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach,

·        Why did the Apostles first have to be with Jesus before He would send them out to preach?

·        There seems to be three groups of Apostles. There was also an “inner circle” of Peter, James and John.

SIMON PETER

·        Simon was the name given to Him by his parents. Peter, or a rock or stone, was the name given to him by Jesus. (John 1:40-42)  In what ways was that laughable?  How, in good conscience, could Jesus name Simon “Rocky”?

·        Perhaps of all the Apostles he had the greatest potential. Perhaps of all the Apostles he had the roughest edges. Name some of the good things Peter did. Name some of the bad things Peter did.  Remember that through it all Peter had a heart for the Lord Jesus. He was always quick to repent and submit.

·        “No one else confessed Christ more boldly or acknowledged His Lordship more explicitly; yet no other disciple ever verbally denied Christ as forcefully or as publicly; No one is praised and blessed by Christ the way Peter was; yet Peter was also the only one Christ ever addressed as Satan. The Lord had harsher things to say to Peter than He ever said to any of the others”. John MacArthur, Twelve Ordinary Men, (Nashville, TN, W Publishing Group, 2002), p. 39

ANDREW

·        Andrew knew what it was to play “second fiddle” to his more notable older brother, Peter.

·        Why is it hard to be the “plain” or “limited” person in a family?

·        Andrew is only known for one talent, but he used that talent well. He knew how to bring people to Jesus. John 1:40-42, John 6:1-13, John 12:20-22

JAMES

·        There are two apostles named “James”.  James was also the name of Jesus’ half brother who wrote the Epistle by that name.

·        James and his younger brother John were nicknamed by Jesus “Sons of Thunder”. What does that tell you about their personalities?

·        They were ambitious, self-righteous and sectarian. Matthew 20:20-23, Luke 9:51-56, Mark 9:38-40.

·        James was the first of the twelve to be martyred. Acts 12:1-2

JOHN

·        The characteristics of John are listed above.

·        John went on to be the “disciple of love” and a prolific writer of the New Testament (5 books).

·        He was at the foot of the cross and received responsibility for the care Jesus’ mother. John 19:26-27

PHILIP

·        When Jesus called Philip he responded immediately and recruited his friend, Nathaniel. John 1:43-45

·        Philip was practical. Philip took time to think things out, to reason. Sometimes he was slow to believe. He was not a “people person” like Andrew. John 6:4-7, John 14:8-11, John 12:20-22

BARTHOLOMEW (NATHANIEL)

·        The brief description that we have of Nathaniel would indicate that he was an Israelite who was seeking the truth and looking for his Messiah. John 1:43-45

·        Nathaniel was not perfect and was guilty of prejudice. John 1:46

·        Nathaniel’s encounter with Jesus indicates a man who had no deceit in his heart and a readiness to believe. John 1:46-51

MATTHEW (LEVI)

·        Matthew turned his back on wealth and a lucrative career to follow Jesus. His call also teaches us that even those who are despised by society have opportunities for a new life in Christ. Luke 5:27-29

THOMAS

·        We think of Thomas as the “doubter”, but John MacArthur says, “Pessimism rather than doubt appears to be his besetting sin.” MacArthur p. 157, John 11:14-16, John 14:1-6, John 20:24-29

JAMES, THE SON OF ALPHAEUS

·        What are the advantages of being an “unknown Christian”?  That’s exactly what “James the Less” was.

SIMON CALLED THE ZEALOT

·        Simon came from a political party that wanted to overthrow Rome.  How can Jesus use zealous people?

JUDAS THE SON OF JAMES (THADDEUS)

·        He was not exciting and maybe not even bright. But he was steady. John 14:22-14

JUDAS ISCARIOT

·        Judas was the traitor.  How do you think he got to that point in his life?

1 JOHN 2:1-2

OUR ADVOCATE

LIVE THE TRUTH #5 -  Studies in 1 John

The most encouraging book I know is the Bible.

Just consider some of the encouraging words found here: John 3:16, Psalm 23:1,6, Psalm 27:1-2, Isaiah 40:31, 41:10, Jeremiah 33:3, Matthew 11:28-30, 21, 22, Romans 8:38-39,10:9-10,

If you like to be encouraged, I have more encouraging words for you as we continue our study of 1 John.

1 John 2:1-2 - My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

AN IMPOSSIBLE PROBLEM

My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.

John is addressing people who mostly respected him as a man of God and a Spiritual mentor. He calls them “My little children”.

John conveys to them his tender care and compassion.  It is comforting to know that God views us who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ as His children. He has wonderful care and compassion towards us. Psalm103:13, Galatians 4:6-7

John is saying that the things that he wrote in the first chapter of his epistle were so believers would sin not.

1 John 1:5 - This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Because God is light, there is no darkness in Him.  Darkness is symbolic for sin.  There is no darkness of sin in God.

1 John 1:6 - If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

If we say that we have fellowship with God, claiming to be in good communication and bound together with him, but walk in a pattern of sin, we are lying, and not practicing truth.

However, 1 John 1:7 says, But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

If we walk in closeness with God, allowing His Holy Spirit to control us, we will have fellowship both with God and each other, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son that was shed for us on the cross will keep on cleansing us from sin.

And there is the promise of 1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If a Christian is honest before God, admitting the specific sins he has committed, God is faithful and just or righteous to forgive and cleanse us.

But now in 1 John 2:1 John tells us he’s writing so we won’t sin.

Well, that’s impossible, and John has already told us that. 1 John 1:8,10

Christian if you are truly saved you will live a life with less sin, but you will not be sinless.  This will frustrate and concern you at times.

And there are those of you in this room with an even bigger problem.  You also should not sin, but you have sinned.  Romans 3:23, Isaiah 64:6

You might say, “So I’ve sinned. I’ve done things that are wrong that have displeased God, so what?” Ezekiel 18:4, Romans 6:23, Psalm 9:17, Isaiah 59:2

My friend, without help from God, your sin is an impossible problem.

AN IMPOSSIBLE PROBLEM

IMMEDIATE HELP

And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

The word advocate means “one called alongside to help.”

When a Christian sins Satan accuses the Christian, as the “accuser of the brethren”.  Jesus is there immediately to help. He is there to plead our case as one of his own.

He is the one called alongside to help in Heaven, while we have another helper on earth, God, the Holy Spirit. John 14:16-18,

John 14:26, 16:7

Notice once again who my immediate help is in Heaven when I sin.  It is “Jesus Christ the Righteous”.  He can perfectly plead my case because He himself is righteous.

So Christian when you sin, you have someone there to help, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now if you are not a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, you have a problem.  You have nobody to help you. You will answer for your own sins. Revelation 20:11-15

As it stands now, if you are without Christ, you are destined for the Lake of Fire.  The good news is, however, that you can turn to Christ, trust Him as your Savior and Jesus will become your advocate, the one called alongside to help you!

AN IMPOSSIBLE PROBLEM

IMMEDIATE HELP

IMMEASURABLE FORGIVENESS

And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

When a Christian sins, and the Lord Jesus comes alongside to help him or her, it is on the basis that the Lord Jesus Christ is the propitiation for our sins.

In other words, my friend, what Jesus did on the cross dying for your sins and paying for your sins in full is why He can be your advocate before the Heavenly Father. He can say to God the Judge, “Father, I died for that, forgive him.” Isaiah 53:4-6

Christian, your sin is humanly impossible for you to deal with. Christian, Christ comes before God and pleads your case. He pleads his own blood as the satisfaction for your sins.

Christian every sin you ever committed was paid for on the cross is paid for. You have a Savior who died for you, and now pleads your case in Heaven as your advocate.

When you sin, you are to confess that sin, so you can maintain fellowship with your Heavenly Father.

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

My friend if you have not placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Savior you have a problem. The Bibles says that you are “dead in trespasses and sins”. That means the “Lake of Fire” is your destiny.

But, I have good news for you.

And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Christ’s death on the cross was sufficient to pay for your sins too. He died for you! That means that right now you can turn to Christ in faith and trust Him as your Savior. Immeasurable forgiveness is available for you! John 3:16, Ephesians 2:8-9

This morning you can receive forgiveness and eternal life if you will trust the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior.

1 John 2:1-2 - My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 JOHN 2:3-6

KNOWING HIM

LIVE THE TRUTH #6 – Studies in 1 John

Let me ask you a question. Does knowing God make your list of what’s important?  It should! Jeremiah 9:23-24,            Philippians 3:10

There is a difference between knowing about God, and actually knowing God, just like there is a difference between knowing about President Obama and knowing him so well you could call him “Barack”.

In verses 3-6 we are reminded that it’s not enough to know about God, or to even think we know God. It is important that we know that we know God. If we do not know that we know God we will either have some sort of false hope or feel very uncertain about our walk with God.

So this morning John talks about “knowing Him” or, more explicitly, knowing that we know Him.

KNOWING HIM PERSONALLY – Vs. 3a

1 John 2:3 - And hereby we do know that we know him…

Orthodox Christianity is a religion that stresses a personal relationship with God.

John talks about the assurance of knowing that we know Him, which could probably refer to either God the Father or God the Son.

So, how do we come to a personal knowledge of God?

First of all, we need to realize that the personal knowledge of God that is referred to does not come naturally.  We are naturally alienated from God by sin. Isaiah 59:1-2

Sin is anything we do that displeases God.  Sin is fatal. Ezekiel 18:4

God in his love sent His sinless son to die for your sins. Romans 5:6-8

The price for your sins has been paid. All you need to do is turn to the Lord Jesus Christ by faith, trusting in Christ alone for forgiveness and eternal life.  Romans 5:1

When you trust Christ He comes into your life through His Holy Spirit.  God takes up residence inside of you. It’s then that you know Him personally and you have eternal life. 1 John 5:11-12

Some of you may be struggling with greater problems than you can handle by yourself. You need help! It begins with knowing God personally.

When you know God personally, you become God’s child, and God’s Holy Spirit brings that comfort and assurance to you that you are the child of God. Romans 8:15:17

So, do you know God because you know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior?  If you trust any other plan to get to Heaven other than faith in Christ, you do not know Him! Put your faith and trust in Him today!

KNOWING HIM POSITIVELY

1 John 2:3 - And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

Actually, the words “we know that we know Him” mean we know that in the past we have come to know Christ and that knowledge of Christ is still impacting us today.

Besides the witness of the Holy Spirit telling us that we are the children of God, we know positively that we know God when we keep His commandments.

If you claim Jesus as your Savior, you have a new master. You have a new boss. John 13:13

You also have a new love.  Your love should be for the one who died for you. John 14:15

Obedience to God is a daily thing. It is not once and awhile I’ll chose to obey God.

Obedience to God is more than not lying, not cheating, or not being immoral, although this is certainly part of it.

Obedience to God is a continual process of learning what God’s Word says and doing it. Psalm 119:1-8, 11

You and I need to be in the Word of God every day so we can learn what it teaches, and obey its teaching.

You are not sinless neither will you be until you go to Heaven.  However, if you truly know Him, you will have a desire for learning God’s Word and a track record of obedience.

We know God in a positive way when we keep His commandments.

KNOWING HIM PROBLEMATICALLY

1 John 2:4 - He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

There are many people today who claim to know the Lord Jesus Christ. Some of these people are even preachers. They claim to know Christ, but they don’t. There’s a problem with their claim to know God.

They say that they know the Lord Jesus, but they don’t and they know they don’t. They are not deceived, they’re liars!

What is their problem? They claim to know Jesus but don’t obey Jesus. Matthew 7:21-23

If you claim to know Jesus as your Savior and there’s no pattern of obedience to Him in your life, you are lying.

If you claim to know Jesus as your Savior and you have no desire to obey Him, you are lying.

He who claims to know Jesus and doesn’t keep His commandments is not only a liar, but the truth is not inside of Him.

He lacks the truth of Jesus Christ who said in John 14:6.

He lacks the Holy Spirit who, as John 14:17 attests is the “Spirit of Truth”

He also lacks the truth of God’s word which is used to set us apart for Him. John 17:17

Now, what about you?  Are you truly a believer and know that you are because you try to obey the commands of Christ? If Christ has no impact on your behavior, be concerned!

I’m not here to put a guilt trip on you, if you are sincerely a believer. If you are a believer, you are not perfect, but Christ does have an impact in your life, and you are striving to obey Him.

To say you know Christ and you do not obey him there’s a big problem.

KNOWING HIM PERSONALLY

KNOWING HIM POSITIVELY

NOT KNOWING HIM PROBLEMATICALLY

KNOWING HIM PERFECTLY

1 John 2:5 - But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

What part does God’s Word have in your life, really?

Is it something that you delight in, that you cling to, and whose teachings you hold with a view to obeying at all times and all costs.

You cannot say that you love God and not love His word and not strive to obey it.

John tells us here that when we obey God’s Word we are showing our maturity (perfection) in Christ. He is not talking about sinless perfection, but a level of maturity that loves Jesus Christ so much that he strives to obey his Word.

This makes sense! 1 John 4:19, 14:15, 21

This is practical!

Because I love Jesus I will obey His commandments to forgive, to pray, to witness, to abide in Him, to help others, to give, and to watch for his coming,

God will enable me to do this through the filling of His Holy Spirit in my life.

Galatians 5:22 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love…

KNOWING HIM PERSONALLY

KNOWING HIM POSITIVELY

KNOWING HIM PROBLEMATICALLY

KNOWING HIM PERFECTLY

KNOWING HIM PRACTICALLY

1 John 2:6 - He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

When we love someone we spend time with him or her.

When we love Jesus we will abide in Him. We will spend time with Him in the Word and prayer, meditating on Scripture and fellowshipping with fellow believers.

We know that we know God in a practical way, when the result of abiding in Christ results in imitating Him, “walking as He walked.”

I am reminded that the only way I will truly ever walk as Jesus walked is by letting Him control me. If He is truly Lord of my life, then “walking as He walked” means dying to self and simply allowing the Spirit of Christ to control my life.                      Luke 9:23, Galatians 2:20
