2 Samuel 11
IT'S SO EASY
David, who was a man after God's heart, sinned on many occasions. The most grievous of his sins was probably his affair with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah. David found out just how easy it is to sin and to displease God.
IT'S EASY TO BE LAZY - Vs. 1
Instead of going off to war with his soldiers, David stayed home. He was lax in his responsibilities.
One of the great problems we have as Christians is that we get lazy in our commitments to the Lord. If we do not continue to fight the world, the flesh, and the Devil, we become lazy. 1 Peter 5:8, Matthew 22:37-40, Ephesians 6:10-11
When we are lazy, we are more susceptible to giving in to temptation.
IT'S EASY TO LUST - Vs. 2
I think of lust as natural desire taken to the extreme. We have healthy natural desires, but when they control us, they lead to lust. 1 John 2:15-16, Matthew 5:27-28
IT'S EASY TO LET GO - Vss. 3-4
Lust in the heart is sin, but it also leads to the actual act of sin.
Instead of resisting sin, David let go of any control he had and committed adultery.
It's easy for us to give in to our lusts as well. When we do, it leads to trouble. James 1:13-15
IT'S EASY TO LOOK OUT FOR #1 - Vss. 8-27
David was looking to cover up his sin. As a result, he tried to make it look like Uriah had gotten his wife pregnant. Uriah never went down to his wife when he came home from the battle.
David then had Uriah murdered so that he could marry Bathsheba and make the whole thing look legitimate.
We are capable of doing some pretty low things to keep others from discovering our sins.
IT'S EASY TO LIVE A LIE
David pretended to be living right, when in reality he was living in sin.
Many Christians pretend to be godly when they are not.
It is important to note that in all of this God was displeased. Vs. 27
This is a previously shared outline.

ABOUT THE LORD
ADORATION OF THE LORD Vss. 1-2

Habakkuk 2:1-20
FAITH TRUSTING AND TAUGHT
Pilgrimage of a Great Thinker Studies in Habakkuk #2
· Generally speaking, I would say that a person who truly trusts God is teachable. What say you? Why?
· What were the conditions in Habakkuks day?
· According to chapter 1 Habakkuk had two problems. What were they?
· According to Habakkuk 1:12 and 2:1, had Habakkuk lost his faith?
Habakkuks faith was being tested in Chapter 1. In chapter 2 Habakkuk trusts God for an answer to question. When God answers, Habakkuk is taught the truth.
PATTERN OF THE PROPHET Vss. 1-3
A. Habakkuk Watched Vs. 1
* Perhaps Habakkuk literally retreated to a tower on the wall where he would watch for Gods answer. Perhaps he was talking figuratively.
* The important thing is that Habakkuk had faith that God would answer and correct Him. He sensed a problem between his understanding and Gods. He also realized that he was the one coming up short, not God.
* What are some of the means that God uses to answer our inquiries?
B. Habakkuk Was to Write Vs. 2
+ Habakkuk was to write legibly the message that God was going to give him. It needed to be clear.
+ The message was to be legible so a person could read and run with it.
+ Notice that prophecy is to be understood, obeyed, and shared with others.
+ Why is it that we spend so little time studying the words of the Prophets?
C. Habakkuk Was to Wait Vs. 3
, Remember that God has appointed times.
, This verse teaches that Gods timing is perfect. We are to wait for God to fulfill His prophecies.
, Isaiah 46:11- yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.
ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE JUST Vs. 4
- The Chaldeans were a proud bunch. The proud soul is not right on the inside. The Chaldeans reflected the condition of all mankind. How does our pride keep us from God and each other?
- These words, but the just shall live by his faith, are some of the greatest words ever written. Why?
- Habakkuks words are echoed three times in the New Testament, each with a slightly different emphasis.
a. Romans 1:17 - For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
b. Galatians 3:11 - But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
c. Hebrews 10:38 - Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. This thought comes from David M. Levy, When Prophets Speak of Judgment, (Bellmawr, NJ, The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry Inc., 1998), pp. 55-56
WARNINGS FOR THE WICKED Vss. 6-19
A. Woe to the Dishonest Vss. 6-8
. Each of these five woes is a part of a taunt song or taunting proverb.
. The Chaldeans marched through the Middle East taking property that didnt rightly belong to them.
. Vs. 6 The Chaldeans are pictured as having taken what belonged to others, and were, therefore indebted to those from whom they had stolen.
. Vss. 7-8 These verses make it obvious that Habakkuk had nothing to worry about. There would be retribution for the Chaldeans. Each person and nation is responsible for their own misdeeds. They would pay. Romans 12:19
B. Woe to the Covetous and Cruel Vss. 9-11
. Vs. 9 King Nebuchadnezzar built an awesome, well fortified city, complete with hanging gardens. He wanted more grandeur and security for himself. He was covetous.
. Vs. 10 He fulfilled his desire through cruelty towards others. He built through the slave labor of those he conquered.
. Vs.11 The very materials that he used were a witness against him. The Babylonian Kingdom was spectacular, but short-lived.
. How does covetousness lead to cruelty?
C. Woe to the Oppressor Vss. 12-14
. Vs. 12 What are some of the typical actions of conquering soldiers?
. Vs. 13 All the efforts of the slave labor would be destroyed by God.
. Vs. 14 Ultimately God will be victorious. The reign of His Son will be a reign of peace. See Isaiah 11.
D. Woe to the Drunkard Vss. 5, 15-17
. Vs. 5 Drunkenness seemed to be a besetting sin of the Chaldeans.
. Vs.15 The Chaldeans made the nations that they conquered drunk so that they could be seduced and humiliated.
. Vss. 16-17 The Chaldeans would receive retribution from God.
. What is the significance of Proverbs 20:1 and Proverbs 23:29-35?
E. Woe to the Idolater Vss. 18-19
. Vs. 18-19 Where do we find carved images in the world today?
. Why is idolatry, as described here, so stupid?
. What are some of our American idols (I dont mean the TV show!)?
REMINDER FOR THE RIGHTEOUS Vs. 20
/ How does the Lord compare with idols according to this verse?
/ Why must the earth keep silence before Him?

SERMON ON THE PLATEAU Part 2 THE JUDGMENT GAME
IN STEP WITH THE MASTER LESSON #14
Luke 6:37-49
ü How can judging others and ourselves be productive?
ü How can judging others and ourselves be destructive?
Its the judgment game! We all play it! Sometimes we play according to the rules and sometimes we violate the rules. As Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Plateau He gives us some principles for judging others and ourselves.
INTRODUCTION
When should we as Christians act as judges?
1. We should judge our own lives for sin, especially when we come to the communion table. 1 Corinthians 11:27-28, James 4:1-10
2. We should judge disagreements between brothers and sisters in Christ. 1 Corinthians 6:1-2
3. We should confront our brothers and sisters when there is obvious sin. Galatians 6:1
4. When there is blatant sin, without repentance, there should be church discipline. Matthew 18:15-17
JUDGING OTHERS Vss. 37-42
PROPORTION Vss. 37-38
Although there is only one way to Heaven, that's through believing on Jesus Christ as personal Savior, and one way to hell, by rejecting Christ, God does award us in proportion to our activities.
· Vs. 37 - Jesus tells us that if we don't want to be judged by others, we should refrain from judging. It is apparent, the more we evaluate others, the more likely we are to be evaluated by others.
· If a brother or sister sins, that matter should first be between you and that brother or sister. Then, if necessary, involve the church.
· If our judgment involves motives, let us leave that for God to judge. If it involves use of time or methods of ministry, let us let God judge that.
· If it involves success of ministry, let us let God be the judge. 1 Corinthians 4:3-5
· Why does God want us to refrain from judging?
· Why should we refrain from condemning others?
· We are also told that the ones who forgive are the ones who are forgiven. If you truly forgive others you will be forgiven, especially by God. Matthew 6:12,14
· Vs. 38 gives us our last example of proportion. A person measuring grain was careful to guarantee a full measure. It was a generous way of measuring. We should give in the same way.
· How does this type of giving tie in with the commands of verse 37?
· However you give to others, that is how it will be given to you.
PERFECTION Vss. 39-40
· Perfection should be our goal. We will never be perfect in this life, but I think we should die trying.
· Vs. 39 - This is a pretty obvious parable. Watch who you follow and how you lead.
· Vs. 40 - The disciple is not above his master. Our master is the Lord Jesus Christ.
· We can't expect to be better than our master, although, sometimes we try, by avoiding some of his examples. Give some examples of how we try to be better than our Master.
PRACTICE Vss. 41-42
· Vs. 41 It is very easy for us to judge the faults of others, but to be oblivious of our own.
· Vs. 42 - Jesus is saying, "How can you be of spiritual help to someone else, when you don't deal with your own problems first?" Notice that Jesus calls people who do this hypocrites.
JUDGING MYSELF Vss. 43-49
WHAT IS MY FRUIT? Vss. 43-45
· What comes out of my mouth should concern me. Why?
· How will the keeping of my heart change the quality of my fruit? Proverbs 4:23 - Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
Philippians 4:8 - Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.WHO IS FIRST? Vs. 46
· Calling Jesus Lord is not sufficient. I must examine myself to make sure that He indeed has first place in my life.
· The acid test to tell if Jesus truly is not only Lord but truly loved by me is obedience. John 14:15
· We as Christians take Lordship lightly. Why?
WHAT IS MY FOUNDATION? Vss. 47-49
· Vs. 47 - The proof that I truly believe is in the coming, hearing and doing.
· I come to hear as I read, and attend church services and/or Bible Studies.
· I do in response to what I have heard.
· Vs. 48 The person who comes, hears and does is like a man putting a solid foundation under his house. Building such a house takes time and effort. Living in obedience to Jesus commands takes time and effort.
· When the storms of adversity come, the lives built on the rock stand firm and do not crumble.
· When the storms of judgment come the true believer stands firm.
· Vs. 49 Some come and hear but they do not obey. It shows unbelief. Theres little work involved and the foundation is sand.
· When the storms of adversity come the life falls apart.
· When the storms of judgment come the unbeliever has nothing to stand on.
· How are these verses indicative that Jesus claimed to be God?
