ONE CHAPTER WONDERS – A Bible Study Series on the One Chapter Books of the Bible: Obadiah, Philemon, 2 John,

3 John, and Jude

#1 – OBADIAH 1:1-21

PRIDE BEFORE THE FALL

·        How does pride hurt family relationships?  Can you give a real life example?

·        How is each of the seven things that displease the Lord in Proverbs 6:16-19 traced back to pride?

·        What are some sins committed by proud nations?

The people of Edom were the descendents of Jacob’s brother, Esau. Their pride hurt family relationships with their brother, Jacob. Obadiah pronounces judgment on Edom as well as all other nations, and shows the ultimate victory to be secured by Israel during the Day of the Lord.

INTRODUCTION

o   Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament (21 verses), and perhaps the most neglected.

o   Although there are many people named Obadiah mentioned in the Old Testament, it is not likely that any one of them wrote this book.

o   Obadiah’s name means “servant of Jehovah”.  Obadiah’s name reflected who He was. That’s all that people need to know about him, or God would have told us more.

o   The writing of this book was in conjunction with a victory over Jerusalem by her enemies.  There are four mentioned in Scripture, but only two are really plausible: the invasion by the Chaldeans led by King Nebuchadnezzar or an invasion in the time of King Jehoram (2 Chronicles 21).

CLASSIC STRUGGLE BETWEEN JACOB AND ESAU AND THEIR DESCENDENTS

§  From the Womb – Genesis 25:19-26

§  Between the Parents – Genesis 25:27-28

§  Concerning Birthright and Blessing – Genesis 25:29-33, Hebrews 12:16, Genesis 27:1-28:9

§  Concerning Relationship with God – Genesis 28:10-22, 32:22-32

§  Esau settled in the region south of the Red Sea called Mount Seir. There were continual struggles between Edom and Israel. 1 Samuel 14:47, 2 Samuel 8:14, 2 Kings 8:20-22

§  Eventually the Edomites were deposed from their land, and became known as the Idumeans. They were eventually forced to become Jews.  The kings named “Herod” were actually descendents of Esau.

Mark 6:7-29

VOICES

Every day we are "bombarded" with the sound of voices.

Voices we hear come from family, friends, and foes.

There are also voices we hear from within. There is the voice of the Holy Spirit, and yes, the voice of Satan.

We can't avoid hearing voices, but we can avoid obeying to the wrong ones.  A man who listened to and obeyed the wrong voices was King Herod.

Introduction: Vss. 7-13

Jesus commissions the disciples to go and preach.

They are successful.

THE VOICE OF CONVICTION - Vss. 14-16, 20

Herod was convicted by the memory of John. Vss. 14-16

Herod was convicted by the voice of John. Vs. 20

THE VOICE OF CONVENIENCE - Vss. 17-19

Herod's wife hated John because John stood for righteousness.

It was convenient for Herod to lock John up to please his wife.

THE VOICE OF COMPROMISE Vss. 21-29

Herod listened to the wrong voice in order to look good in front of

others. He knew it was wrong, but would not lose face.

Luke 8

CLASSIC STORIES OF JESUS

IN STEP WITH THE MASTER – LESSON #16 – Studies in Luke

·        What is your favorite story about Jesus and why?

Luke 8 is rich with “classic” stories about Jesus. This chapter is also rich in practical applications for our daily lives. As we study, see what practical lessons for daily living that you can find.

CLASSIC MINISTRY – Vss. 1-3

CLASSIC PARABLE – Vss. 4-18

1.      THE STORY PRESENTED - Vss. 4-8

2.      THE STORY QUESTIONED Vss. 9-10

·        Through the help of God's Spirit, God's children will be able to learn the truth of God's Word.                    John 16:13

·        Those who reject Christ will not be able to understand the parables which Jesus spoke.                                     1 Corinthians 2:14

3.      THE STORY EXPLAINED Vss. 11-15

·        The seed is the Word of God. The sower in this story is The Lord Jesus.  However, any Christian who preaches or teaches the Word of God becomes the sower. Matthew 28:19-20, 1 Timothy 4:2

·        The different soils are explained:

1.     HARD HEART - Vs. 12 - No real interest in the Gospel, even though a profession of faith may have been made.  Satan quickly snatches away the seed.

2.     HEAVY HEART - Vs. 13 - Quick initial response, but when persecution comes, the convert fails to follow Christ. Mark 4:16-17, 2 Timothy 3:12

3.     HEATHEN HEART - Vs. 14 - Matthew 6:31-32, - Cares, riches, and pleasures of this life "choke" the "converts". There is no fruit.

4.     HEALTHY HEART - Vs. 15 - Hears the word, keeps it, endures, and brings forth multiplied fruit.                   Only one kind of "convert" is a truly saved convert. If a person has truly trusted Christ, God will change him. 2 Corinthians 5:17

CLASSIC MISUNDERSTANDING – Vss. 19-21

CLASSIC EXAM – Vss. 22-25 – Their Faith Was Tested!

1.     DECISION - Vs. 22 - When the disciples received their "exam" in faith, they were following the decision of our Lord Jesus Christ.  May we face our exams because we are simply doing what the Lord has told us to do!

2.     DISTRACTION - Vs. 23 - As the disciples did as they were told, a large distraction appeared.  A fierce storm threatened the very lives of the disciples.  As we strive to obey the Lord, we will also face distractions.  It is not a question if distractions (trials) will occur. The question is how will we handle distractions when they come?

3.     DISTRESS - Vs. 24a - In a panic, the disciples awoke the Lord Jesus. They allowed themselves to become distressed by the storm. They were filled with fear.

4.     DECLARATION - Vs. 24b - Our Lord awoke and rebuked the wind and waves.  His declaration brought total calm.  Our problems may never go away until we reach Heaven, but if we trust Him, Jesus will declare peace for us in the midst of our storms.  We can relax in the calm of His presence.

5.     DENUNCIATION - Vs. 25 - Our Lord rebuked the disciples for their lack of faith, not for disturbing His nap!  It was not wrong to ask Jesus for help. It was wrong not to have faith in the midst of the storm.

CLASSIC EXORCISM – Vss. 26-39

1.     THE BONDAGE OF POSSESSION – Vss. 26-30                                                                                                                   The man was demon-possessed, naked, and restless.

2.     THE BOLDNESS OF JESUS – Vss. 29, 31-33                                                                                                                      The Lord commanded the legion of demons to come out of the man.                                                                          The Lord allowed the demons to enter the herd of swine.

3.     THE BLESSINGS OF DELIVERANCE – Vss. 34-35                                                                                                           The man was sitting, no longer restless.                                                                                                                             The man was clothed, no longer naked.                                                                                                                                       The man was in his right mind, no longer demon possessed.

4.     THE BANISHMENT BY THE FEARFUL – Vss. 36-37                                                                                                        The citizens of the area, having heard what happened, became fearful and asked Jesus to leave.

5.     THE BROADCAST OF THE DELIVERED – Vss. 38-39                                                                                                   The healed man wanted to go with Jesus, but the Lord gave him another job.  He was to go home and share what God had done for Him.  This he did.

CLASSIC RESURRECTION  – Vss. 40-42, 49-56

1.     A WILLING SAVIOR – Vss. 40-42

2.     A WOUNDED FATHER – Vs. 49

3.     A WELL DAUGHTER – Vss. 50-56

CLASSIC FAITH  – Vss. 43-48

1.     REACH BY FAITH – Vss. 43-44

2.     RECOGNITION OF A MIRACLE Vss. 45-47

3.     REASSURANCE FROM THE MASTER – Vs. 48

Galatians 5:16-21

STAY OUT OF THE MUD!

Children like to play. If we are wise parents, we let children play.  We let the boys play with trucks and cars, and the girls with dolls and house stuff.  We allow both to play outside on swings and slides and we encourage them to play games such as "hide and seek" and "tag".  However, there is at least one place I never wanted my children to play, and that was in the mud!  Mud is dirty. Mud is filthy. Mud leaves tracks on carpets and floors. Mud produces extra baths and extra loads of dirty clothes to wash.  I would advise any children, "Stay out of the mud!"

Our heavenly Father has the same desire for His children. He wants us to stay out of the mud called sin! See 1 John 1:5-2:2.

Our text shows us how to stay out of the mud, and some specific sins to avoid if we are going to remain pure.

THE SURE WAY - Galatians 5:16 - "Walk In The Spirit"

THE SURE WARFARE - Galatians 5:17-18 - The war is between the "flesh" and "the Spirit". As I am led by the Spirit, I will win the war.

THE SURE WARNING - Vss. 19-21 - Here is a list of sins to avoid.

THIS IS A PREVIOUSLY SHARED OUTLINE, A “RERUN”, IF YOU WILL!

*************************************************************************

1 JOHN 2:28-3:3

LOOKING FOR HIS COMING - Live the Truth #12 (1 John)

Although we do not know the exact date of Jesus’ return we are to be looking for His coming.  John tells us how as he continues to encourage us to “Live the Truth”.

John just taught us how to spot a phony – 2:18-27

ABIDE – 2:28

Abide in His Word – Especially Gospel Truths – Vs. 24

Abide in Anointing – Vss. 20-21, 27

Confidence – “Freedom of speech” - Not be ashamed – Unbelievers will certainly be ashamed. All true believers will have a sense of boldness.

Accountability could lead to shame. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15

Coming = parousia = used for monarch arriving for a state visit – great celebration – Queen Elizabeth, Pope

APPRAISE – 2:29

1st birth – moral nature = Adam

2nd birth – moral nature = God – Romans 5:19

Practicing righteousness is my “ID” card as a Christian.

APPRECIATE – 3:1

“Behold” – See! – “What manner” – astonishment – like being amazed that your wife loves you – I am related to God! – Logical that world doesn’t understand.

ANTICIPATE – 3:2-3

We are children of God now! It’s going to get better!

We shall be like Him! We shall see Him as He is!

Therefore I want to be like Him now!

Romans 8:29, Philippians 3:12-14
