Ruth 1 and 3

MOTHER IN-LAW

There have been many jokes about mother in-laws (You may tell one or two, if you feel so led.), however there have been many good and godly mother in-laws.  My mother in-law, Grace Adams, was a Christian woman who quietly worked behind the scenes to help those in need.

In the book of Ruth we meet Naomi, who was by no means perfect, but in the end, had a positive witness on her daughter in-law, Ruth.  Here is her story.

SHE WANDERED FROM GOD - 1:1-5

In a time of famine Naomi went with her husband Elimelech into the land of Moab.

They should have remained in God's land among God's people.

During this time of wandering her sons married unsaved girls, Moabites.

Her husband died, and so did her sons.

SHE WENT HOME - 1:6-7

She was returning to God's land of blessing.  She was coming back to where she once had been.

SHE WITNESSED TO HER DAUGHTERS IN-LAW - 1:8-18

This was not traditional witnessing as we would think of it.

However, she must have talked enough about the Lord, that Ruth was willing to follow her and claim her God.

Naomi actually tried to send her daughters in-law back, and Orpah did return to Moab.

Her influence on Ruth was strong enough, however, that she stayed by Naomi and went to Israel with her. She also claimed the God of Israel as her God.

Mother in-laws can have a very strong influence on their daughters and sons in-law for good or bad.

SHE WORKED TOWARDS RUTH'S WELL-BEING - 3:1-4

It was Naomi who told Ruth to approach Boaz, seeking that he redeem her as a kinsman-redeemer.

It was her advice that led to the redemption of Ruth, her marriage to Boaz, and the birth of Obed, the grandfather of David. See chapters 3-4 to fill in the details.

Luke 4:14 - 5:11

RESPONSES TO CHRIST

IN STEP WITH THE MASTER – LESSON #9

How have you seen people respond to the Lord Jesus Christ (The Gospel, His life, and/or His teaching)?

Obviously a negative response to the Gospel is critical (John 3:36).  How do Christians sometimes help cause a negative response?

If we are born again our response to Christ is also critical. How? Why?

After giving accounts of Jesus’ baptism and temptation, Luke now tells us of various responses to the Lord Jesus Christ during His early ministry.

NAZARETH – STUBBORNNESS (UNBELIEF) – 4:14-30

·        Vss. 14-15 – It is important to note that Jesus went through the temptation in the power of the Holy Spirit and that He began His public ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit. As His followers, we should imitate His reliance on the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:14, Galatians 5:16, Ephesians 6:18

·        Notice that Jesus gained quick notoriety as He taught. He was a “rising young star” in Galilee, and well received.  Why should we be leery of the praise of men?

·        Luke does not always place events in the order that they happened, but in an order that best represents Jesus to Luke’s audience. Luke lets his audience know, first of all, the character of Jesus’ ministry.

·        Vs. 16 – Notice that Jesus’ custom was to be in the synagogue.  What keeps many Christians from being as regular in church as Jesus was in the synagogue?

·        “A typical synagogue service opened with an invocation for God's blessing and then the recitation of the traditional Hebrew confession of faith (Deut. 6:4-9; 11:13-21). This was followed by prayer and the prescribed readings from the Law and from the Prophets, with the reader paraphrasing the Hebrew Scriptures in Aramaic. This was followed by a brief sermon given by one of the men of the congregation or perhaps by a visiting rabbi (see Acts 13:14-16). If a priest was present, the service closed with a benediction. Otherwise, one of the laymen prayed and the meeting was dismissed.”  Warren Wiersbe, Bible Exposition Commentary - New Testament, (Wheaton Illinois, Victor Books, 1989, p. 184

·        Vss. 17-19 – Jesus opened Isaiah and read from Isaiah 61:1-2 and 58:6b.

·        Quoting Isaiah 61:2 Jesus left out the phrase, “And the day of vengeance of our God.” Why?

·        Vss. 20-21 – Jesus announced that He was the fulfillment of these verses. Look at each phrase. How is Jesus the fulfillment of each of these phrases?

·        Vs. 22 – “They wondered at His preaching, but did not take it to heart.” Leon Morris, Tyndale New Testament Commentary, Luke (Revised Edition), (Grand Rapids, Michigan, Inter Varsity Press and W. B. Eerdmans, 1974,  1988) p.117

·        Vs. 23 – Jesus basically tells the people what they are thinking. They wanted Jesus to prove Himself by performing miracles in Nazareth.

·        Vs. 24 – A hometown boy has trouble being accepted among those who think they know him best. The unbelief of the people hindered Jesus from doing great things. (Mark 6:4-6) How does unbelief hinder us?

·        Vss. 25-27 – Jesus pointed out that in the days of Elijah and Elisha miracles were performed for Gentiles instead of Jews.  How were these words prophetic concerning the church?

·        Vss. 28-30 – Why were the people so incensed, and why was Jesus protected?

DEMONS – SUBMISSION – 4:33-35

·        Vss. 33-34 – What do we learn about the tactics of demons in these verses?

·        Vss. 33-35 – What do we learn about Jesus in these verses?

·        The demons must submit to the Lord Jesus. How does that encourage you? How does that challenge you?

CAPERNAUM – SURPRISE – 4:31-32, 36-37

·        Vss. 31-32 – Jesus made Capernaum his home base. He preached there on several Sabbaths. What was the difference between them and the crowd in Nazareth?

·        The teachers the people of Capernaum were accustomed to hearing usually quoted other Rabbis and writings. They did not speak with great authority.

·        Why could Jesus teach and preach with authority?  How can preachers and teachers preach and teach with authority today? 1 Corinthians 1:18, 2:1-5

·        Vss. 36-37 – The demoniac was healed and the people were amazed at His power.

·        What should be happening in the church that would make unsaved people amazed at the power of God?

PETER’S MOTHER IN-LAW – SERVICE – 4:38-39

·        After services in the synagogue, Jesus went for dinner at Peter’s house.

·        Peter’s mother had a desperately high fever and Jesus was asked to help. Jesus rebuked the fever and the lady was immediately healed.

·        When Jesus healed he healed completely. When Jesus saves He saves completely. Hebrews 7:24-25

·        Notice that Peter’s mother in-law responded by serving the one who healed her.  How much more should we who are Christians serve the one who saved us!

·        Besides preaching and teaching, what are some ways each Christian can serve the Lord?

THE NEEDY AND SELFISH – SEEKING – 4:40-44

·        Vs. 40 – The Sabbath ended in the evening. Many people after observing the Sabbath brought the sick and demon possessed to the Lord Jesus. He healed them all!

·        Vs. 41 – Why did Jesus not allow the demons to identify Him as Messiah?

·        Vs. 42 – The crowds wanted Jesus to stay. How was that selfish?

·        Vss. 43-44 – Why would it have been easier for Jesus to stay where He was?

·        What does Jesus teach us about God’s will in this incident?

·        Why do churches tend to be self-centered?

PETER – SURRENDERING – 5:1-11

·        This encounter with Jesus was not the first, neither is this the first “call” to discipleship issued to Peter, Andrew, James, and John. John 1:35-42, Matthew 4:18-22

·        Vss. 1-3 – Jesus used Peter’s boat as a pulpit. The crowds were great, so addressing them from the boat was a great instance of crowd control.

·        Vs. 4 – Jesus was telling Peter to do something that most fishermen would not do.  Fisherman didn’t fish in the middle of the day, because the fish were generally not there.  Fishing was also done in shallow waters, not in the deep. Does Jesus have any right to tell us what to do? Why? Do we listen?

·        Vs. 5 – It is logical to think that Peter the fisherman knew more about fishing than Jesus the carpenter, thus Peter’s response. However, Peter agrees to cast his net. Why did Peter choose to do this?

·        Vss. 6-7 – It was a huge catch of fish. Peter called for help because the net was breaking.

·        Vss. 8-9 – Peter is under conviction. What part does Peter have with the Son of God? Peter saw his sin in comparison to his Master and realized how unworthy he was.  Should we make that same comparison?

·        Vs. 10 – At first, Peter’s time with Jesus was sporadic, but now Peter would be full time, catching men. Catching men here means to catch them alive!

·        Vs. 11 – In light of who Jesus is, the men surrendered to full time service.  Why should we be surrendered to the calls of Jesus upon our lives?

1 John 1:1-2

THIS IS NO FAIRY TALE

LIVING THE TRUTH #1 – Sermons from 1 John

This morning I am beginning a new series of messages in a little letter called 1 John. John was a disciple of the Lord Jesus who probably lived well into his 80’s. Inspired by God, he wrote the Gospel of John, the letters 1st, 2nd, and 3rd John, and the Book of Revelation.

When John wrote this letter, he was concerned for those in churches which were probably in Asia where he was living. He was concerned that they would know the truth in their heads, believe the truth in their hearts, and live the truth in their daily walk.

There were those in John’s day who were saying that Jesus was not a man, only a spirit. There were those in John’s day who were saying that people needed some sort of “superior knowledge” above the teachings in the Word of God.

There were those in John’s day who were broadminded about religion, as long as you’re religion wasn’t dogmatic, insisting that what you believe is the only way to God. Sound familiar?

And my friend, although we should always be tolerant of the religious beliefs of others, allowing them to worship as they please, we must remember what Jesus said in John 14:6 …"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

That’s why, although we are tolerant of the beliefs of others, we need to share with them the truth of the Gospel.

And to share truth we must know truth.

And to share truth so that people will at least listen seriously to us, we must live the truth.

John in his little letter is saying to you, “Here is the truth! Live it!” For this reason I have entitled this series of messages on first John, “Live the Truth!”

John begins his letter to us (God preserved this letter as His Word, hence it is a letter to us!), by informing us that Christianity is not a fairy tale like the Greek and Roman Mythology that abounded in John’s day.

1 John 1:1-2 - That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life-- the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us--

Jesus Christ was very real as God in the flesh. In 1John 1:1-2, John tells us that Christianity and Christ Himself are very real and that he is a witness to that fact.

John tells us of:

THE REALITY OF THE PAST

THE REALITY OF THE PATTERN

THE REALITY OF THE PERSON

THE REALITY OF THE PROCLAMATION

THE REALITY OF THE PAST

That which was from the beginning,

Notice that John does not begin with the words, “Once upon a time”…

When we hear these words, we know right away that we are preparing to hear a fairy tale, a myth, that which is not true.

Instead, John says, what I am about to tell you has a real beginning.

To which beginning does John primarily refer?  As an eye witness, John is talking about what he had seen. For John that beginning is described in his Gospel. John 1:35-39

In all likelihood, John and Andrew were those two disciples.

There are two other books of the Bible that refer to beginnings.  They too, are significant and very much a part of what we believe as Christians.

Genesis 1:1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

The beginning here refers to the creation. In the beginning when the Heavens and earth were created, God was there.    He created them. Creation was no accident. Things just did not come together. God has put His imprint on creation proving that He did it. Psalm 19:1, Romans 1:20,

What was Jesus doing when the universe was being created at this beginning? He was creating as God the Son.                Colossians 1:16-17, Hebrews 1:1-2, John 1:3

Now if you would like more arguments for creation, I suggest you visit a couple of websites:

The Institute for Creation Research - http://www.icr.org

Answers in Genesis - http://www.answersingenesis.org

There is one more beginning that we need to consider.

John 1:1-2 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.

Before creation Christ existed.

THE REALITY OF THE PATTERN

We see here the very real pattern of John’s Witness.

which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled,

John begins by saying, “We heard Him!

We heard the Son of God speak!”

John heard The Sermon on the Mount, The Olivet Discourse, The Upper Room Discourse, The Lord’s intercessory prayer in John 17, the last Words on the Cross and the confrontation of Peter after the Resurrection.

John heard when Jesus confronted the Pharisees, comforted those in sorrow, and answered questions.

Then John says, “We saw Him!”

which we have seen with our eyes

·        Jesus walked on Water. John saw it.

·        Jesus turned the Water into wine! John saw it.

·        Jesus fed 5,000. John saw it.

·        Jesus healed the sick and made the blind to see. John saw it.

·        Jesus calmed the storm. John saw it.

·        Jesus was transfigured, showing His true glory, and John saw it!

·        Jesus raised at least three people from the dead, including Lazarus. John saw it.

·        Jesus was betrayed. John saw it.

·        Jesus died on the cross. John saw it.

·        Jesus rose from the dead. John saw the risen Lord.

·        Jesus ascended into Heaven. John saw it.

Then John says, which we have looked upon.

This is more than a glance. By being with Jesus for over 3 years John was able to gaze intently.

He gives more testimony of this in John 1:14, And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

There is a lesson here for us. Through Bible study, prayer, and meditation we should gaze intently, beholding His glory.

In fact, that should be the goal of our lives.

Philippians 3:10 - that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,

Then John adds, and our hands have handled

There was physical contact.  There was physical contact now and again over the time they spent together.  John knew that Jesus was not just a spirit. John had leaned on Jesus’ chest.

John had examined Jesus after the resurrection. Luke 24:39-43

John is showing us the pattern of His encounter with the Lord Jesus and showing how real that pattern is.

This is no fairy tale!

THE REALITY OF THE PERSON

concerning the Word of life--

We know from John 1:14 that the Word was a person  - And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,

In John 1 Jesus is called the “Word”.

What is the purpose of words?

Words express a thought, or an action or an object or an idea.

If I want you to understand what I think about a subject, such as the superiority of Christ, I use words.

If I want you to visualize an object, such as a banana, a boat,

a house, or a car, I use specific words.

If I want you to have an idea of what I am like or how I feel, I use words, such as angry, upset, loving, forgiving or talkative.

God wants us to understand who He is.

So, He has given us not only His written word, but his incarnate Word, God in the flesh, the Lord Jesus Christ.

John says That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—

The Lord Jesus Christ is the “Word of Life”, the message of eternal life from God.

He came to give us that life because we wouldn’t have it unless He came. Jeremiah 17:9, Ezekiel 18:4,

Our natural state is described in Ephesians 2:1 as dead in trespasses and sins.

So, God, in His love, sent His Son. 1 John 4:10, John 3:16

John is telling us that this is no fairy tale.

Eternal life is found in the person who is the “Word of Life”.

THE REALITY OF THE PROCLAMATION

the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us--

John is making a proclamation here.

He tells us that the life was revealed. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6 - Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

John says “we saw the life!”, therefore we proclaim it to you!

John says it’s the eternal life that was with the Father and revealed to the disciples.

John was proclaiming something that was real and not a fairy tale. John was proclaiming something which he had experienced for Himself.

Let me ask you is Jesus real to you or is He a fairytale?

He is only real to you if you have trusted Him as your Savior.

He is only real to you if you believe that He rose from the dead.

He is only real to you if you believe that He literally came in the flesh as a real person and died for your sins.

He is only real to you if you believe that He is living now inside of you and cares about you and what you are doing.

He is only real to you if He has changed your life.

He is only real to you if you allow Him to be an important part of your life right now. John 10:10

John declares that this is no fairytale or myth.

THE REALITY OF THE PAST - That which was from the beginning,

THE REALITY OF THE PATTERN - which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled,

THE REALITY OF THE PERSON - concerning the Word of life--

THE REALITY OF THE PROCLAMATION - the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us--

All Scriptures in this outline are in the New Kings James Version.

Selected Scriptures

MOTHERS WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Give some of your own examples of mothers who made a difference in their children's lives.

Here are four examples from God's Word of mother's who made a difference in the lives of their children.

THE PROTECTIVE MOTHER - Exodus 2:1-4

Moses' Mother made sure that Moses was protected, even when Moses was in great danger.

Godly mothers protect their children physically, morally, emotionally and spiritually.

THE SUPPORTIVE MOTHER - 1 Samuel 1:24-28

Hannah had promised God that if she had a male child, she would give him to the Lord.

Samuel was born and at an early age taken to the Lord's house to be a servant.

Hannah continued to support the boy by providing for his needs. (1 Samuel 2:9)

Hannah is a model for all parents of Christian children.  Our children should be given over to the Lord for whatever purpose He has for them.  And whatever the Lord chooses to do with that child, we, as parents, should be supportive.

THE INSTRUCTIVE MOTHER - 2 Timothy 1:5 and 3:15

Timothy's mother and grandmother set the example of faith.

Timothy was taught the Scriptures at a very early age.

THE LOYAL MOTHER - John 19:25

Mary was loyal to her son to the point of death.

We need to be loyal to our children to the end.

This does not mean we should approve of our children's sin.

We should, however, be loyal to our children wherever they are, and whatever they are doing

EXCITING WOMEN

I began this message, preached on Mother’s Day, by asking the congregation to name some “exciting women” over the last fifty years. Then I asked them to name some exciting women throughout history.  God has made women to be exciting, and by following some of the examples of the following women, women (and men) today can be exciting as well (in  a good way).

EVE – THE FIRST WOMAN

Eve was unique. She was first. That made her exciting.

Every woman is unique. That makes her exciting!

Genesis 1:27 - So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Psalm 139:14 - I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Genesis 2:18 - And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Genesis 2:21-24 - And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; [22] And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. [23] And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. [24] Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

RAHAB – THE FORGIVEN WOMAN

Rahab had been a prostitute.  She was forgiven.  I believe that the scarlet cord she let down represents the shed blood of Christ, sacrificed for her sin.  Every woman can find forgiveness in Christ. That’s exciting!

Joshua 2:1 - And Joshua the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even Jericho. And they went, and came into an harlot's house, named Rahab, and lodged there.

Joshua 2:10-13 - For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed. [11] And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath. [12] Now therefore, I pray you, swear unto me by the Lord, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also shew kindness unto my father's house, and give me a true token: [13] And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

Joshua 2:18 - Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father's household, home unto thee.

Joshua 6:25 - And Joshua saved Rahab the harlot alive, and her father's household, and all that she had; and she dwelleth in Israel even unto this day; because she hid the messengers, which Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

DEBORAH – THE FORTIFIED WOMAN

Deborah was a woman who was fortified with courage.  Deborah led in a time when the men of Israel were generally at a Spiritual low.  Many a courageous Christian woman has led the way when the men wouldn’t do it.

Judges 4:1-4 - And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord, when Ehud was dead. [2] And the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles. [3] And the children of Israel cried unto the Lord: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel. [4] And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.

Judges 4:6-7 - And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedesh-naphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the Lord God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun? [7] And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.

Judges 4:8-9 - And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go. [9] And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the Lord shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

Judges 4:14-15 - And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the Lord hath delivered Sisera into thine hand: is not the Lord gone out before thee? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him. [15] And the Lord discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet.

RUTH – THE FAITHFUL WOMAN

Ruth would not forsake her mother in-law or her new found faith in the Lord God of Israel.  She stuck faithfully to Naomi.  She ended up being one of the ancestors of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ruth 1:16 - And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:

1 Corinthians 4:2 - Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

HANNAH – THE FERVENT WOMAN

Hannah was fervent in her prayers.  God answered.  It is exciting to think of what God has done in answer to many a godly woman’s prayers.

1 Samuel 1:12-13 - And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli marked her mouth. [13] Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

1 Samuel 1:14-16 - And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee. [15] And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunken neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. [16] Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

1 Samuel 1:17 - Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

1 Samuel 1:20 - Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord.

This ministry has grown over the years because people like you have told others about Sermon Seeds.  Always feel free to forward the weekly Sermon Seeds email to those who you think might be interested in these outlines.
