Genesis 22:1-14

JEHOVAH-JIREH - THE LORD WILL PROVIDE

A missionary on the foreign field is stranded in a foreign land in the middle of a war. No checks from the mission can get through. Jehovah-jireh - the Lord will provide!

A young Christian lady marries a young Christian man. Soon they have two small girls. Suddenly the man tragically loses his life.  The wife has no work skills, and there are two small children to feed, clothe, and house. Jehovah-jireh - the Lord will provide!

Another Christian woman, living for the Lord, is divorced by her husband. Jehovah-jireh, the Lord will provide.

An elderly couple is retired, living on a fixed income. Medical costs escalate. There is little money. Jehovah-jireh - the Lord will provide.

A Christian worker is faced with what appears to be insurmountable odds in the work of the ministry. Jehovah-jireh - the Lord will provide.

It was not unusual for Bible characters to name places after the experiences that happened in that place. That is why Abraham named the place where he almost offered Isaac as a sacrifice "Jehovah-jireh". The word means "the Lord will provide".

Our God is a God of provision. When we serve Him, He takes the responsibility for all our needs. Philippians 4:19

Abraham found this to be true when he received what was probably the greatest test of all in his walk with God.  We want to look at this test and see that "the Lord will provide".

God had promised Abraham a Son. Genesis 12:1-3, 15:3-6, Genesis 17:19, Genesis 18:9-15

Isaac, whose name means "laughter" was born when Abraham was 100 and Sarah was 99.

Abraham's life after the birth of Isaac was evidently spent in comparative quiet. He was a rich old man raising a young son. He had experienced many tests and trials in his life time, but probably now things seemed to be just fine.

Then, one day, Abraham faced what was the biggest challenge of his lifetime.

UNBELIEVABLE TEST - Vss. 1-2

God decided to test Abraham. No saint is immune from tests or trials. Because God loves us, He tests us. Romans 5:3-5, James 1:2-4, Psalm 66:10

Notice that Abraham responded to God's call quickly because he knew the voice of God.

God asks Abraham to give Him his most valued possession, which was his only son.

What is your most valued possession? Are you willing to part with it if God wants you to? Luke 14:26-27

UNCONDITIONAL OBEDIENCE - Vs. 3

For Abraham there was no argument, no stalling, or talking to Sarah.

He took the wood, the servants, and Isaac. He didn't even take a lamb in case God would "change His mind".

UNWAVERING TRUST - Vss. 4-8

Vss. 4-5 - Notice that Abraham says "We'll be back." God had promised Abraham that he would be blessed. He believed God. Abraham believed that God would resurrect Isaac. Hebrews 11:17-19

Vss. 7-8 - Notice that Abraham trusted in the provision of God. God indeed provided a lamb for Abraham on the mountain, but he also provided Himself a lamb at Calvary.

God will take care of our needs today. We can still trust Him. Matthew 6:25-33

UNDENIABLE SUBMISSION - Vss. 9-12

Vss. 9-10Isaac's submission was admirable through all of this. Abraham's submission was even more admirable. He was willing to do what God asked, even if he ended up with a broken heart.

Vss. 11-12 - God was watching all the time. Abraham had passed the test of submission. There was no reason for Abraham to slay his son.

UNLIMITED SUPPLY - Vss. 13-14

What did God provide for Abraham?

He provided a lamb in the thicket.

He provided the strength to go through the most difficult time of his life.

God provided the wisdom to handle the servants and Isaac.

God provided the emotional stability to handle such a great load.

God provided Himself through the whole experience.

Fire came from Heaven and consumed the sacrifices.

DISPLAY OF GOD'S PRESENCE - Vss. 1b-2

The glory of the Lord filled the temple and it was so tremendous that the priests could not enter.

DISPLAY OF GOD'S PLEASURE - Vss. 1-2

For God to react the way He did, it is obvious that He was pleased.

TESTIMONY TIME

We never know when we will be required to speak up for the Lord.

Paul had been worshipping in the temple, when he was falsely accused of bringing a Gentile inside the temple. A riot followed.  The captain of the Roman guard broke up the riot, and bound Paul with chains.

Paul asked the captain for an opportunity to speak up.  Paul gave his personal testimony.

ROMANS 12:3-8

USING WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN YOU

We have all been given gifts down through the years.  Some of these gifts were practical and others not so practical.  Some have been helpful and others not so helpful.

No gift is really practical or helpful however unless we start to use it.

God has given each Christian at least one Spiritual gift (1 Corinthians 12:4-7, Ephesians 4:7-12).  These gifts, no matter how great they are, are worthless unless we use what God has given us.

REFLECT - Vs. 3

Each one should give a sober, honest evaluation of his gifts.  He should not in pride, fool himself into thinking that God has given more than He has.  However, if a man is sober and honest, he will not deny or ignore what gifts God has given us.

REMEMBER - Vss. 4-5

We need to remember that we are all members of one body, the body of Christ.

We also need to remember that God has given us different positions and gifts within that body.

And we need to remember that we are members with each other.  We are a team, and each one has his specific place to fill.

RESPOND - Vss. 6-8

We must respond by understanding what the gifts are that God has given us.

Then, we are to respond by using these gifts by faith.

(Of course, in preaching this sermon, you will want to explain each of the gifts listed in this passage.)

1 JOHN 1:3-4

BONDED!

#3 – Live the Truth – 1 John

The Bible uses another word for bonding.  The word is fellowship.  Now, when we think of fellowship, we think of having coffee or food of some kind and shooting the breeze for a while. We think of camaraderie.  While that is indeed enjoyable, true fellowship goes deeper than that.

John Phillips – The word used for ‘fellowship’ here is koinonia, meaning communion, sharing, having things in common.” John Phillips, Exploring the Epistles of John, (Grand Rapids MI, Kregel Publications) p.30

When there is fellowship there is sharing of things that all have in common.  It is a bonding together in partnership.

1 John 1:3-4 - That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. [4] And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

I am drawn to the word fellowship as the key word in our text.

One of the keys to remaining faithful in a church, and most importantly to the Lord is developing strong bonds of fellowship. Again this goes much deeper than a pot luck supper.

We all need help and support in living the truth.  Don’t expect to live the truth without bonding, or as John calls it, fellowship.

Why should you want that kind of bonding or fellowship?

Verse 4 tells you why, that your joy may be full.

You can not have true joy in your life unless you have true fellowship.

You might have all sorts of substitutes for joy, but you will not know real joy until you have this three-fold fellowship or bonding.

Real joy is found in bonding with God the Father, God the Son, and with fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who are also bonding with God the Father and God the Son.  It is God the Holy Spirit who does this bonding. 1 Corinthians 12:13

BONDING WITH THE FATHER

and truly our fellowship is with the Father,

John talks about having fellowship with God.

He is talking about a partnership, a having in common, a communion with God.

Right away there is a problem.  What do I have in common with God?  On what basis can I form a partnership with God?

God is just or righteous, I am not.  I am a sinner.

God is holy, set apart from sin. I am not.

God is perfect, I am not.

Because of my sin, I have trouble having any thing in common with God.

God has solved my problem. It is the first step in bonding with God.

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING WITH A PARENT

God knew that we would have a problem with sin.

God knew that we would never be just or righteous enough to have fellowship with Him without His help.

That’s why he sent his Son to die for our sins, so He could declare us as righteous or just, in order to have fellowship with Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 5:9

Not only are we justified, declared righteous and fit for fellowship based on his shed blood, but also on the basis of our personal faith commitment, our trust in Jesus Christ as our Savior. Romans 5:1

The moment we trust Christ as Savior a bonding takes place that is absolutely amazing and wonderful.  We are born into the family of God.  We become God’s children in the most intimate of ways. John 1:12-13

We are now bond together with God the Father as His precious children. Romans 8:15, Galatians 4:6-7

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING IN PRAISE

One of the ways we bond with the Father is by giving Him the praise that He deserves.

I will have fellowship with the Father, as I direct my mind, heart, and words centered on Him and not me. Hebrews 13:15, Psalm 96:1-2, Psalm 47:6-7

We bond with the Father as we worship Him.  Sometimes we don’t feel close to God because we have not developed that attitude of worship.

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING IN PRAYER

We can’t have fellowship, bonding, unless there is communication.  We have been called into a wonderful, personal communication with God through prayer.  And we come to God in prayer because we have someone in common, His Son.  We pray in Jesus’ name, in his authority. John 16:24, 1 Peter 5:7,

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING IN PURPOSE

When I bond with my Heavenly Father, I have the same purpose as God.  What is God’s purpose?  God’s purpose is to bring glory to Himself.

Isaiah 42:8 - I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

This makes decision making much easier.

If I make every decision based on the premise that God must be glorified, most decisions become “no-brainers”.  We simply must chose to do what glorifies Him alone!

BONDING WITH THE SON

and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

·        BONDING WITH THE SON IS BONDING WITH MY LORD

Somebody is going to be boss in my life.  Will it be me?

Will it be some other person!  Will it be a bad habit, a hobby, a sport, my job or money?

Or will it be the LORD JESUS? John 13:13, John 12:24-26

To be fruitful and to bond with Jesus we must die to ourselves and He must be Lord.  We hate our own lives so we might serve and follow the Lord Jesus.

Jesus is Lord, but you won’t bond with Him unless you acknowledge His Lordship and authority over you!

·        BONDING WITH THE LORD IS BONDING WITH MY HIGH PRIEST

Hebrews 4:14-16 - Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. [15] For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

I can come to the “Throne of Grace” bringing all my struggles and knowing that I have a friend there to hear them and intercede for me before the Father.

·        BONDING WITH THE LORD IS BONDING WITH HIS POWER

Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Galatians 2:20 - I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

BONDING WITH THE SAINTS

That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us:

We live in an age when the church has stopped binding together.  People come and go Sunday after Sunday, but few have real fellowship with each other.

So how do we bond together with fellow believers, the saints?

·        TO BOND WITH THE SAINTS, WE SHARE!

We share with other saints, by worshipping together.

We share with other saints as we share our testimonies. This we do on Sunday nights.

We share with other saints as we talk to them, let them share our burdens, and share our burdens with them.

We share with saints as we encourage them. Hebrews 10:24-25

·        TO BOND WITH THE SAINTS WE SERVE!

We all have Spiritual gifts that God has given us.  We are not to be selfish with these gifts, but we are to serve each other with these gifts.

The singer shares his or her gifts.

The teacher shares his or her gifts.

The pastor shares his gifts.

The person who has practical skills shares his or her gifts.

Every Christian has something he or she can do to serve. Galatians 5:13

Another way we serve is through our prayers for each other. Ephesians 6:18

Still another way we share is by working together to take the Gospel to the world.  We do this through missions giving and going ourselves, at least to our neighbor. We need to partner together to get the Gospel out.

·        TO BOND WITH THE SAINTS IS TO SHOW!

John 13:34-35 - A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. [35] By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Others should be able to see the Love that we have for each other in Christ.

It is time for us to be binding, to have fellowship

1 John 1:3-4 - That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us:and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. [4] And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

BONDING WITH THE FATHER

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING WITH A PARENT

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING IN PRAISE

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING IN PRAYER

·        BONDING WITH THE FATHER IS BONDING IN PURPOSE

BONDING WITH THE SON

·        BONDING WITH THE SON IS BONDING WITH MY LORD

·        BONDING WITH THE LORD IS BONDING WITH MY HIGH PRIEST

·        BONDING WITH THE LORD IS BONDING WITH HIS POWER

BONDING WITH THE SAINTS

·        TO BOND WITH THE SAINTS, WE SHARE!

·        TO BOND WITH THE SAINTS WE SERVE!

·        TO BOND WITH THE SAINTS IS TO SHOW!
