2 Chronicles 7:14
A NATION AFTER GOD'S HEART
I suggest that just before this sermon that you sing "America" ("My Country 'Tis of Thee).
This morning during our worship service we did something that was first done almost 170 years ago at a July 4th celebration. It was on July 4th, 1831 when the words "My Country 'Tis of Thee', our national hymn, were first sung by the Sunday School children in the Park Street Church in Boston.
"Oliver Wendell Holmes, who was a classmate of the author, Samuel Frances Smith, a Baptist minister, attributed Smith's genius in the song to the very first word, "my". This makes the song personal, and instantly challenges every patriot." (source unkown)
Of course, the hymn "America" is a hymn of pride. We as Americans have much to be proud of!
We can be proud of our beautiful forests, gorgeous mountains, enormous rivers, and fertile farmlands.
We can be proud of our democracy, our system of government, and our freedoms of speech and movement.
We can be proud to be a refuge for those in need. It is written on the base or our Statue of Liberty,
"Give me your tired, your poor, you huddled masses yearning to be free, The refuse of your teeming shore. Send these the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door."
We can be proud of our Bill of Rights, and proud that it is on our money that it says, "In God we trust".
I, for one, am proud to sing "My Country 'Tis of Thee"!
But let's not fool ourselves. We are a nation that is in trouble!
We are a nation that permits babies to be murdered through abortion.
We are a nation that has to build more cells because our prisons are overcrowded.
We are a nation that forbids prayer in school, and forbids Christian groups to meet on some campuses.
We are a nation whose general morality has reached an all time low.
We tend to slap the face of God who made us a great nation!
There is no doubt that America is but a shadow of her previous greatness. Does this have anything to do with God? 2 Chronicles 7:13 tells us that the answer is "yes"! In appearing to Solomon God shows that He commands the things that happen to a nation. He controls the weather, the animal population and disease according to this verse.
2 Chronicles 36:14-17 shows God's judgment on Judah. The same thing happened to the Northern Kingdom of Israel.
My friends, never say that it couldn't happen here!
Down through the centuries too many nations have fallen for us to presumptuous.
Instead, we must ask, "Can we reverse the trend?" The answer, of course, is "yes"!
God shows us how to reverse the trend in 2 Chronicles 7:14
Let us answer 3 questions:
1. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
God says that His people are the responsible ones.
Originally, that would have meant that God was speaking to Israel. Today, however, the people of God are the Christians. Romans 10:12-13
Notice also that the people of God are those called by His name.
We are called "Christians", named after Jesus Christ, who is God in the flesh.
It is the Christian who needs to be responsible for a national turning back to God.
2. WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES?
We are to humble ourselves. James 4:6,10
We are to pray. I believe this is a prayer of confession. Psalm 32:5
We are to seek God's face.
We are to turn from our wicked ways.
3. HOW WILL GOD RESPOND?
He will hear from Heaven.
He will forgive our sin.
He will heal our land.
This is a previously shared outline.

Luke 5:1-31
TOUCHED BY JESUS
IN STEP WITH THE MASTER LESSON #10
Studies in Luke
(Please not that I repeated the last section of Lesson 9 as part of Lesson 10. I actually taught as part of Lesson #10.)
ü Tell us about a life that you have seen touched by Jesus.
ü How have you been touched by Jesus?
ü Why is being touched by Jesus not always a literal touch?
ü Name someone we should pray for to be touched by Jesus.
In Luke 5 we find several people who were touched in some way by the Lord Jesus Christ
PETER (AND OTHERS) TOUCHED FOR SERVICE 5:1-11
· This encounter with Jesus was not the first, neither is this the first call to discipleship issued to Peter, Andrew, James, and John. John 1:35-42, Matthew 4:18-22
· Vss. 1-3 Jesus used Peters boat as a pulpit. The crowds were great, so addressing them from the boat was a great instance of crowd control.
· Vs. 4 Jesus was telling Peter to do something that most fishermen would not do. Fisherman didnt fish in the middle of the day, because the fish were generally not there. Fishing was also done in shallow waters, not in the deep. Does Jesus have any right to tell us what to do? Why? Do we listen?
· Vs. 5 It is logical to think that Peter the fisherman knew more about fishing than Jesus the carpenter, thus Peters response. However, Peter agrees to cast his net. Why did Peter choose to do this?
· Vss. 6-7 It was a huge catch of fish. Peter called for help because the net was breaking.
· Vss. 8-9 Peter is under conviction. What part does Peter have with the Son of God? Peter saw his sin in comparison to his Master and realized how unworthy he was. Why should we make that same comparison?
· Vs. 10 At first, Peters time with Jesus was sporadic, but now Peter would be full time, catching men. Catching men here means to catch them alive!
· Vs. 11 In light of who Jesus is, the men surrendered to full time service. Why should we be surrendered to the calls of Jesus upon our lives?
· Most of us in this group are older. Should we discount any notion that God would call us into Christian Service? Why or why not?
THE LEPER TOUCHED FOR CLEANSING Vss. 12-16
· Vs. 12 Jesus was evidently on a ministry trip in Galilee. A leper approached the Lord Jesus.
· The term lepra can refer to a array of diseases. It produces lesions or other swollen areas on the skin. Sometimes It attacks the nervous system. It includes not only Hansens disease, but psoriasis, lupus, ringworm, and favus. Darrell L. Bock, The NIV Application Commentary, Luke, (Grand Rapids, Michigan, Zondervan Publishing House, 1996), 156
· The Old Testament goes to great detail on how to deal with possible leprosy cases. Leviticus 13-14
· One who had the disease was ostracized from society. The leper had a lonely miserable life.
· How would you equate sin with leprosy?
· Notice that man didnt say that he wanted to be healed, although that is the case. He wanted to be cleansed. Of course when we are saved, we have been cleansed from our sins. Isaiah 1:18, Psalm 103:12, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
· Notice the mans submissive attitude. He didnt doubt the Lords ability, only His willingness.
· Vs. 13 Jesus touched the man. He got up close and personal with the person in need. Today it would be the equivalent of touching someone with aides. How have we failed to imitate our Master?
· Notice that Jesus was willing to cleanse the man.
· How is Jesus willing to cleanse us today? 1 John 1:9, 1 Corinthians 10:12-14, Romans 6:11-14
· Vs. 14 - Jesus wanted the man to show himself to the priests in accordance with the Old Testament Law. Leviticus 14
· Why do think the man was to remain silent?
· Vs. 15 Why didnt he remain silent? Mark 1:45
· Vs. 16 Jesus never asks us to do what He didnt do Himself. Lets follow His example in prayer. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Ephesians 6:18,
THE PARALYTIC TOUCHED FOR FORGIVENESS Vss. 17-26
· Vs. 17 The Pharisees were a religious party within Judaism. They were strict in their interpretation of the law. The scribes were the ones who copied the Scriptures and served as religious lawyers. Both groups were often hypocritical in their behavior. Matthew 23:13-36
· Why do you think this group was gathered around Jesus? Why is it significant that the power of Lord was present to heal them?
· Vss. 18-19 Why did at least four people work so hard to get this man to Jesus? They actually removed the roof to get the man in Jesus presence. How hard are we willing to work to get people to Jesus?
· Vs. 20 Jesus saw faith in those that brought the man to Jesus. Does Jesus see ours?
· Jesus declared that the mans sins were forgiven. What does that tell you about the man?
· Is all sickness caused by a specific sin?
· Vs. 21 The Pharisees immediately passed judgment on Jesus. What part of their thoughts was right? What part was wrong?
· Vss. 22-23 How would you answer Jesus question?
· Vs. 24 The term Son of Man was a term that Jesus used to identify Himself. The term has its roots in Daniel 7:13-14, and clearly shows that Jesus is the Messiah and God.
· How did the healing of this man show that Jesus had the power to forgive sins?
· Vs. 25 Why did the paralytic return home glorifying God? Think before you answer.
· Vs. 26 What should the response of the crowd encourage us to do?
LEVI (MATTHEW) TOUCHED FOR SALVATION Vss. 27-28
· Vs. 27 Matthew ran a tax toll both on commerce. He was not a chief tax collector.
· Jesus call to Matthew was very direct, Follow me! How direct is the message of salvation? 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Romans 5:1, Ephesians 2:8-9, John 3:16-18
· Vs. 28 Matthew walked away from a very profitable business, proving 2 Corinthians 5:17 to be true.
· In what ways should we expect change even after we have been saved for a long time.
TAX COLLECTORS AND SINNERS TOUCHED FOR EVANGELISM Vss. 29-31
· Vs. 29 The man just quit his job and hes giving a feast. Why?
· Vs. 30 Why did the Pharisees complain about the guest list?
· Vss. 31-32 Why was Jesus thrilled with Matthews guest list?
· It is possible to be sick and deny that one needs a doctor. The doctor can only help those who admit that they are sick. So, those who consider themselves righteous will never be helped by Jesus. Luke 18:9-14
· How should Jesus words affect our social lives?

Philippians 4:14-19
MISSIONS GIVING
PAYMENTS OF SUPPORT
Philippians 4:14-16 - Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction. [15] Now ye Philippians know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. [16] For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.
PURPOSE FOR CONCERN
Philippians 4:17 - Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.
PATTERN OF GIVING
Philippians 4:18 - But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.
PROVISION FROM GOD
Philippians 4:19 - But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
LIVE THE TRUTH #3 Series in 1 John
In studying for this weeks message I came across some things that you should know. These are things that pertain to the nature or attributes of God. As we learn these things they should produce a distinct response from us.
Two weeks ago we explained that Christianity is no fairy tale. John was a witness of the reality of Christianity and Christ Himself. 1 John 1:1-2
Last week we saw that one of the keys to remaining faithful in a church, and most importantly to the Lord is developing strong bonds of fellowship. Again this goes much deeper than a pot luck supper. We all need help and support in living the truth. Dont expect to live the truth without bonding, or as John calls it, fellowship. 1John 1:3-4
GOD IS LIGHT THIS SHOULD AFFECT OUR ACTIONS 1 John 1:5
God is light! Notice it does not say, God is a light. God is light! Psalm 104:1-2
What is the first thing mentioned that God did on the first day of creation? He turned on the lights! Genesis 1:1-5
When God led the children of Israel through the wilderness he did so with a pillar of fire at night! Thats light!
When Jesus, God in the flesh was transfigured in front of the disciples, so that they saw who Jesus really is, He shone in light. Matthew 17:2, Luke 9:29
Light and life go together. Light is needed for life. Psalm 36:9
As God the Son, Jesus brought both physical and spiritual light and life. John 1:3-5, John 1:9, John 8:12
When a person comes to Jesus Christ, believing on Christ alone as the one who died for his or her sins, he or she becomes a child of God! John 1:12
When we become children of God, we become children of light! Ephesians 5:8
As children of light, we become Gods light in a sin-darkened world. Matthew 5:14-16
God, through His Word gives us light. Psalm 119:105, 130
When we think of God as light, we must remember that light signifies everything that is right, holy, virtuous, moral, and pure. 1 John 1:5
God is light. Anything in your life that is darkness is not of God.
Well, so what? God is light and in Him is no darkness. Its no big deal if I sin, or is it?
1 John 1:6 - If we are truly bonding with God the Father, God the Son, and with other believers, darkness in our lives must be dealt with! As children of light, we are not to walk in darkness.
Our actions as Christians must be affected by the fact that God is light! 1 John 1:7
GOD IS LOVE THIS SHOULD AFFECT OUR ATTITUDE AND OUR ACTIONS 1 John 4:7-8
1 John 4:7-8 - Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
· Why does this world exist? God is love! Genesis 1:1
· Why do you exist? God is love! Genesis 1:27
· Why is this world so beautiful? God is love! Psalm 19:1
· Why does the sun come up faithfully, and why does the rain come even when mankind does not deserve it? God is love! Matthew 5:44-45
· Why do we have eternal life? God is love! Ephesians 2:4-5, John 3:16
· Why do we have forgiveness for the sins we commit after we become Christians? God in His faithful justice, which also reflects his love, forgives us when we confess. 1John 1:9
God is love we are told. It is not just that God shows His love from time to time. God is love all the time.
Granted, we do not always understand what God is doing or why He does what He does. Thats because we are finite. We need to be convinced that God loves.
Because God is love, and we are Gods children if we know Jesus as our Savior, we are to love as He loves. Our attitudes and actions should reflect this love of God.
In 1 John 4:7-8, we are told to love each other as God loves us. That means that we need to forgive each other as God forgives us. Ephesians 4:32
In John 3:17, we are told that if we do not help those in need, we do not love each other.
There is one more thought I want to convey. When we allow Gods love to control us, we will be perfected in love, It also means that we will not live in perpetual state of fear any longer. Ephesians 1:6, 1 John 4:18-19
Allow Gods love to control you and dont fear!
Allow Gods love to control you and love each other!
GOD IS SPIRIT THIS SHOULD AFFECT OUR ADORATION John 4:23-24
It is not that God is a Spirit. God is Spirit.
God is not a man.
God is not a created being. He is creator
God is Spirit. He has no body. His Spirit is everywhere. Psalm 139:7-10
The words of Jesus in John 4:23-24 were directed to The Woman at the Well. She was asking about the proper place of worship.
Jesus pointed out that God is Spirit, and because He is Spirit, the place of worship is not important. God must not be worshipped as an image of a created being. God does not have to be worshipped in a particular place.
However we are told that God must be worshipped in spirit and in truth. God made us with a spirit, and therefore it is with that spirit that we are to worship Him.
This means that it is not so much our outward worship that is important. It is our inward adoration that is important and will affect our outward worship.
Worship is to be in spirit and in truth. I cannot worship God in spirit and in truth unless my spirit is controlled by His Spirit.
I cannot worship God in truth unless I have believed the truth of the Gospel and practice truth in my life.
All too often our worship has been with our lips but not in the realities of Spirit and truth. Matthew 15:8-9, Ephesians 5:18-21
Worship is within the spirit or heart of man. Therefore, if my spirit is right, I will be able to worship in spirit and in truth.
There are three things John wants us to know:
GOD IS LIGHT THIS SHOULD AFFECT OUR ACTIONS
GOD IS LOVE THIS SHOULD AFFECT OUR ATTITUDE AND OUR ACTIONS
GOD IS SPIRIT THIS SHOULD AFFECT OUR ADORATION
