Luke 5:33-6:11

ANSWERING THE CRITICS

IN STEP WITH THE MASTER – LESSON #11 – Luke

ü  Why is it good to have critics?

ü  Why is it troublesome to have critics?

ü  Name some of the different types of critics that we will face.

ü  What are some productive ways to handle our critics?

ü  Some of Jesus’ greatest critics were the Pharisees. Who were these people and why were they so critical?

In Luke 5:33-6:11 we see Jesus answering his critics concerning 3 different issues. Two of these issues concerned alleged violations of the Sabbath.

THE FASTING ISSUE – 5:33-39

·        Vs. 33 – John’s disciples were in on this discussion (Matthew 9:14, Mark 2:18) Why do you think they were concerned with Jesus’ diet?

·        Fasting was a common religious exercise for the Jews. The Pharisees fasted twice a week. What are some reasons (right and wrong) for fasting?

·        There was only one time of fasting called for in the Old Testament. That was for the Day of Atonement. Leviticus 16:24-31

·        Vs. 34 – A wedding celebration was a great time lasting several days. Even those who would normally fast didn’t.

·        The disciples were in the presence of the bridegroom.  The church is the Bride of Christ. This was a time of joy! Ephesians 5:22-33

·        Although we do not see Jesus, He is present with us through the Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16, 6:19-20,). Why should churches be more joyful places than they actually are? What can we do to fix it?

·        Vs. 35 - A time did come when the disciples fasted. That was after Jesus was crucified.

·        What might be some appropriate times for fasting? Acts 14:23, 1 Corinthians 7:5

·        Is fasting for everyone?

·        Vss. 36-38 – What is the point of these two parables?

·        How is Christianity different from Judaism? Galatians 3:28, Colossians 3:11

·        Vs.39 – The Jews were guilty of sticking to the old wine without trying the new. How is this verse a warning to us?

THE SABBATH HARVESTING ISSUE – 6:1-5

·        Vs. 1 – It was a Sabbath Day and the disciples were hungry. While walking through the fields they helped themselves to a “snack” of grain.  This was legal according to the Old Testament Law.  Deuteronomy 23:25

·        Vs. 2 – The Sabbath was a day of rest (Exodus 20:8-11).  In order to insure that the Jews would not break the Law, additional regulations were added.

·        “According to the Mishnah, no fewer than thirty-nine different kinds of work were forbidden on the Sabbath, including reaping, threshing, winnowing and preparing food. When the disciples picked some heads of grain, the Pharisees thought they were reaping. When they rubbed them in their hands to separate the wheat from the chaff, they considered this threshing and winnowing. And when they started to eat the grain, they were guilty of preparing food on the Sabbath. So with every mouthful, the disciples were violating the law four different ways. Thus said the Pharisees.” Philip Graham Ryken, Reformed Expository Commentary, Luke Volume 1, (Philipsburg, NJ, P & R Publishing, 2009) p. 242

·        Vss. 3-4 – Jesus gave an example of David breaking the ceremonial law because he and his men were hungry. 1 Samuel 21:1-5

·        The priest and David conspired to break, in the strictest sense, the law.  Why was this not a problem with Jesus, who is God?

·        What lessons are found in Jesus’ response?

·        Vs. 5 – Remember, “Son of Man” is a Messianic term. What does it mean that He is “Lord of the Sabbath”?

·        What can we surmise about the response of the Pharisees to this statement?

THE SABBATH HEALING ISSUE – 6:6-11

·        Vss. 6 -7 – What is tragic about the behavior of the Pharisees?

·        Vs. 8 – Jesus knew what the Pharisees were thinking. He had the man stand in front of them.

·        Vs. 9 – What is Jesus’ point from this question?

·        Why is Sunday an especially good day to show mercy?

·        Vs. 10 – As with all of Jesus’ healings, it was perfect!

·        Vs. 11 – What would you say to a livid Pharisee?

1Timothy 3:8-13

THE DEACON

If the work of God is going to get done there must be willing workers. Each and every Christian has that responsibility. Titus 3:8, 1 Peter 4:10, Galatians 5:13

God has given a special group of servants to the church.

These special servants are known as "deacons".

In the early church these men were "servants" who assisted the elders or overseers (bishops) of the church.  These were men who knew how to serve and how to serve well.

In the 20th century we need men who follow in the footsteps of the original deacons.

THE WORK OF THE DEACON - Acts 6:1-7

Vs. 1 - The deacons were appointed when the work became too large

Vs. 2 - The deacons were appointed when the word of God could have been neglected.

Vs. 3 - The deacons were appointed when Godly men were available.

Vs. 4 - The deacons were appointed when leaders had their priorities straight.

Vss. 5-7 - The deacons were appointed and the church grew.

THE WAY OF THE DEACON - Vss. 8-12

The deacon is to be:

1.     A man of good behavior - Vs. 8, 10b

2.     A man of pure conscience - Vs. 9

3.     A man who has been proved - Vs. 10a

4.     A man who has a Godly wife - Vs. 11

5.     A man who has his household in order - Vs. 12

THE WAGES OF THE DEACON - Vs. 13

The one who is a good deacon earns a good degree or "rank".

He is promoted in the eyes of God and Man and might go on to bigger and better things for God (Consider Stephen in Acts 6-7).

But even if he does not, his testimony for and his ultimate reward from the Master will be worth it.

This is a previously shared outline.

1 JOHN 1:6-10

IF

LIVE THE TRUTH #4 1 John

We often use that two letter word “if”. Sometimes it is part of humor, but more often than not, we are placing conditions on something we’ve said.

·        You may go out and play if you do your homework first.

·        You may buy a new car, if you buy me a new kitchen.

·        You may use my tools, if you put them back.

·        You may go out tonight if you clean your room first.

·        You may have dessert if you eat your vegetables.

We often place the word “if” in our statements.  When we do we want the people listening to know that there are conditions to abide by.

In 1 John 1:6-10 God uses the word “if” 5 times.  When God uses the word “if”, He wants us to pay attention because He is saying something important.

We have said that the theme of 1 John is “Live the Truth”.  In his little letter, John is telling us what the truth is, and how to live it.

What good is truth unless you apply to your life?

What good is trying to live the Christian Life, unless you know the truth behind the way you should live?

In our text this morning, God gives us some “ifs” based on three important themes

The basis for the “ifs” in these verses is based on 1 John 1:5.

1 John 1:5 - This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

God is light! Notice it does not say, “God is a light.” God is light! Psalm 104:2

Light at its best is pure. God is pure.

Light exposes dirt. God exposes the dirtiness of sin.

Light gives hope. God gives hope.

Light dispels darkness.  God dispels darkness. In fact, 1 John 1:5 tells us that in God there is no darkness at all!

Based on this 1 John 1:5, John makes three statements that people make that are false.

THE “IF’S” OF FALSEHOOD – Vss. 6, 8, 10

1 John 1:6 - If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

When there is fellowship there is sharing of things that all have in common.  It is a bonding together in partnership.               1 John 1:3

As we stated previously, there is a three-fold bonding that is to take place: bonding with the Father, bonding with the Son, and bonding with the saints.

John’s first “if” found in verse 6 is a warning to and against those who claim to have fellowship with God and walk in darkness.

Anyone who claims to have fellowship with God and continually walks in “darkness” is not practicing the truth!

Many people claim closeness to God. They speak well of Him, and talk as if God and they were the best friends. But when you look at the pattern of their lives, you find something missing.

Just as we have character traits of our parents, and our children have picked up our character traits (often the worst ones!), children of God will take on character traits of their Heavenly Father.

What you are on the outside betrays what you are really like on the inside. Luke 6:43-46

The fruit that is seen in our lives should be the good fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23

The second “If” of falsehood is 1 John 1:8 - If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

How many people have you met who think themselves to be basically good?  They think that although they might make mistakes or exercise occasional bad judgment, they are moral upstanding people and “okay” in the eyes of God.

They are denying that they have a sinful nature. Jeremiah 17:9, Isaiah 64:6, Romans 3:10-12, Romans 3:10-12

I’m afraid that we Christians also think of ourselves as better than we are.  We don’t take “little lies”, outbursts of temper, or “minor violations” of the law seriously.

When we claim to not have sin we are only fooling one person, ourselves!

The third “If of falsehood is 1 John 1:10 - If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

The third lie we tell ourselves is that we have not sinned. We deny that our behavior is sinful, and that we’ve done anything wrong. We deny that we are sinners by practice.

When we do this we are calling God a liar. Romans 3:23

When we claim God is lying, His word is certainly not in us.

I think there is a very important lesson for each of us here. We should never minimize even the least of our sins. We need to realize that the smallest sin grieves the heart of a righteous God. If we are truly saved, the last thing we should want to do is grieve our Heavenly Father.

THE “IF’S” OF FALSEHOOD

THE “IF” OF FELLOWSHIP – Vs. 7

1 John 1:7 - But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

God is light. In Him is no darkness.

To walk in the light, means that my life has been changed or transformed. My pattern for living has changed.

We can only walk in light if we are children of light.

When a person recognizes his or her sinful condition and sinfulness and trusts that Christ died for their sin, and that Christ is their only hope of salvation, a wonderful change takes place. John 1:12, 2 Corinthians 5:17

As children of God, you and I are now children of light. Ephesians 5:8-9

If we claim to have fellowship, a bond with God, and walk in darkness we lie and do not practice the truth. However, when I walk in the light as God is in the light, we have true bonding or fellowship not only with God, but with each other.

When I walk in God’s light, I am submissive. Luke 9:23

When I walk in God’s light, I am prayerful. 1Thessalonians 5:16-18

When I walk in God’s light, I am influenced by God’s Word. John 14:21

When I walk in God’s light, I am controlled by God’s Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:16

If I am walking in God’s light as a Christian God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are pleased. When this happens there is fellowship between me and God.

And because I am in fellowship with God, I will also be having human fellowship, bonding, with others who are also in fellowship with God.

Often we do not have fellowship with other Christians because he, I, or both of us are not in fellowship with God.

And notice what happens when there is fellowship.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

We are justified or declared righteous by the blood of Christ. As we go through this life, the blood of Christ continues to cleanse us. This is because light exposes sin. As we deal with our sins, we are cleansed from all sin.

That leads us to our final “If”.

THE “IF” OF FORGIVENESS – Vs. 9

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If a Christian is honest before God, admitting the specific sins he has committed, God is faithful and just or righteous to forgive.

He is faithful in his love. And righteous to forgive based on the sacrifice that His Son made for our sins. God forgives the sins of the Christian because God has promised to forgive them when a person trusts Christ as Savior. 1 Corinthians 6:11

When a Christian sins it does not affect his standing with God. He is still a child of God. If a Christian should die without confessing all his sins, he will still go to Heaven.

A Christian’s fellowship with God is affected when he or she sins. Psalm 66:18

Psalm 66:18 - If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear.

Please turn to John 13:2-5 – Supper was over, and Jesus took on the role of a servant and began to wash the feet of his disciples.

John 13:6-8 – Peter objected to Jesus washing his feet.

John 13:8-10 – Jesus explained that the washing of the feet was necessary.

Peter, as compliant as he was wanted a whole bath.

Jesus’ explanation was that the one who is bathed, only needs his feet washed.

In those people wore sandals. One could have a bath and then take a walk, and the feet got dirty.

Of course this foot washing is symbolic. When we trust Jesus as our Savior we are bathed. We are righteous.                                  2 Corinthians 5:21, Philippians 3:8-9

As we walk though life our feet get dirty. We pick up sin. We don’t need another salvation. We need our feet washed.

That’s why the “if” of forgiveness is so necessary. 1 John 1:9, Psalm 32:5

God wants us to be happy. We will only be happy as we are transparent with God.

THE “IF’S” OF FALSEHOOD

The first “If” of falsehood is 1 John 1:6 - If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

The second “If” of falsehood is 1 John 1:8, If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

The third “If of falsehood is 1 John 1:10, If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

THE “IF” OF FELLOWSHIP

1 John 1:7 - But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

THE “IF” OF FORGIVENESS

1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

All Scriptures are NKJV.
