UNTIL HE COMES AGAIN
ACTS 1:1-11
Introduction:
When Jesus was arrested, tried, and crucified, His disciples thought it was all over. They forsook Jesus and fled. They were grief stricken over the events that happened at Calvary.
What they had expected was for the Lord Jesus to assume the throne of David and deliver the Jews from the Roman rule, but Jesus had been humiliated and crucified on a cruel cross.
Then came the third day after his death. Jesus was not in the grave. He showed Himself alive.
Luke records in the book of Acts that Jesus appeared to His disciples for a period of 40 days after His resurrection. And when He left, He gave them and us a great work to do until He comes again.
I. UNTIL HE COMES AGAIN HE HAS GIVEN US AN UNFINISHED TASK (vs 1-2)
That unfinished task is to get the gospel to every person of every nation.
Matthew 28:19-20–"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
A. Our Task Will Be Unfinished Until We Are Gone.
Mark 16:15–"And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature."
1. That Is Why We Preach Soulwinning.
2. That Is Why We Preach Faith Promise Missions Giving.
There is no way to be obedient to God without being obedient to the Great Commission
B. The Task Itself Will Be Unfinished Even After We Are Gone.
Matthew 24:14–"And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come."
Revelation 14:6–"And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,"
II. UNTIL HE COMES AGAIN HE HAS GIVEN US AN UNDENIABLE ASSURANCE.
(vs 3) "He shewed Himself alive after His passion by many infallible proofs."
III. UNTIL HE COMES AGAIN HE HAS GIVEN US AN UNALTERABLE MESSAGE. (vs8) (Jesus said, ". . .ye shall be witnesses unto me. . .")
A. We Must Not Alter The Genesis Record Of God.
I'm talking about the Genesis account of creation.
Genesis 1:1–"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
God created the heavens and the earth and all that is in them in six literal days.
Exodus 20:11–"For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
Hebrews 11:3–"Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."
B. We Must Not Alter The Greatness Of God
Psalm 135:5–"For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods."
1. He Is The Great Omniscient God.
2. He Is The Great Omnipresent God.
3. He Is The Great Omnipotent God.
4. He Is The Great Immutable God.
5. He Is The Great Eternal God.
6. He Is The Great Sovereign God.
7. He Is The Great Inexhaustible God.
C. We Must Not Alter The Godhead Of God.
Colossians 2:9–"For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."
This is talking about the Deity of Christ. Don't take away from who He is!
The Holy Trinity cannot be altered.
God the Father Is God, God the Son Is God, God the Holy Spirit Is God.
They are one God manifested in three persons.
Deut 6:4–"The LORD our God is one LORD."
D. We Must Not Alter The Goodness Of God.
God is always good, God is always right.
Psalm 52:1–"The goodness of God endureth continually."
Satan tempts men to believe that sometimes God is not good or that God is not right.
E. We Must Not Alter The Gospel Of God.
Galatians 1:8–"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed."
1 Corinthians 15:3–"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:"
1. It Is A Prophesied Gospel.
2. It Is A Purposeful Gospel.
3. It Is A Powerful Gospel. (Romans 1:16)
4. It Was And Is To Be A Proclaimed Gospel.
F. We Must Not Alter The Gift Of God.
Ephesians 2:8-9--"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Romans 6:23–". . .the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Anyone who tries to make God's salvation something other than a gift does a disgrace to His grace.
G. We Must Not Alter The Guarantee Of God.
Those who of us who are "in Christ" have been promised eternal life and everlasting life.
We've been promised that He will never leave us nor forsake us.
We've been promised that He will in no wise cast us out.
H. We Must Not Alter The Gathering Of God.
I am talking about the local church, the ekklesia, the called out assembly of believers.
It is Christ's Church. It is His Body.
What we do to the Body of Christ, we do to Christ. Acts 9:4-5
I. We Must Not Alter The Glory Of God.
1. There Is Glory In His Revelation.
a. The Revelation In Christ Jesus.
b. The Revelation In The Word Of God.
c. There Is Glory In His Resurrection.
d. There Will Be Glory In His Return.
IV. UNTIL HE COMES AGAIN HE HAS GIVEN US UNEQUALED POWER. (v 8).
A. The Power Of The Gospel.
Romans 1:16–"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." ("What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus")
1 Corinthians 1:18–"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."
B. The Power Of Christ's Resurrection.
Matthew 28:18–"And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore. . ."
C. The Power Of The Holy Spirit.
Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.
1. Power For Speaking.
2. Power For Sanctifying.
3. Power For Service.
V. UNTIL HE COMES AGAIN HE HAS GIVEN US AN UNFAILING PROMISE.
(v 6-7, 11).
John 14:3–". . .I will come again and receive you to myself. . ."
Titus 2:13–"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorius appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ."
Conclusion
What are you doing until he comes again?
Are you ready to meet God? Are saved? Are you sure? Are you serving?
