So Much Less*
by J. Randal Matheny © 2015

He lived his life in perpetual retreat,
With so much less than he'd ever hoped,
A squandered mind that felt defeat,
And limited skills that merely coped.

No daring saint, nor evil's spawn,
But an average man of scattered sight,
Who lived bereft of greatness' dawn,
And stumbled through unending night.

*The first two lines echo a sentence by Dean Koontz
in 77 Shadow Street.
