Somewhere Else to Go

Posted by: Asn <Asn@...>

At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him. Then
Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, "Are you going to leave, too?"
Simon Peter replied, "Lord, to whom would we go? You alone have the
words that give eternal life. We believe them, and we know you are the
Holy One of God." John 6:66-69 (NLT)

Have you ever noticed that Jesus wasn't always gentle with His
disciples? In Matthew 8:19-22, for example, a teacher of the law said
to Him, "I will follow you wherever you go." However, upon learning
that the journey would not lead to the palace, he turned back. Another
disciple said to Him, "Let me first go and bury my father." A seemingly
reasonable request, yet Jesus told him he must make a choice and not
look back. In fact, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks
back is fit for service in the kingdom of God," He said in Luke 9. Why?
Because those who maintain something to go back to will inevitable find
themselves drawn back to it.

Is it any wonder that Jesus asked The Twelve if they would also turn
back? Life had not been, nor would it be, a bed of roses. Those who
adored Jesus' healing ministry are the same ones who later shouted,
"Crucify Him!" He knew His discriples would suffer similar fates at the
hands of those who called themselves God's children. Yet they had left
all they had to follow Jesus, had staked everything on Him. There was
no turning back. Imperfections and all, they were completely His,
completely dependent upon Him. He was all they had. And He empowered
them to change the world.

Heavenly Father, I repent of looking back, of maintaining somewhere else
- anywhere else - to run. Nothing else can satisfy the deepest longings
of my heart. You are everything and without You, I am nothing. Master,
I surrender to You in all things. In Jesus' name, amen.
