Standing Under the Standard

Posted by: <@...>

When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him and put him to flight [for He will come like a rushing stream which the breath of the Lord drives].  (Isaiah 59:19b AMP)

According to Miriam-Webster's dictionary, the word "standard" originates from an Anglo-French word meaning "banner," and is akin to an Old English word meaning "to stand."  It defines standard as "a name, slogan, or goal associated with a particular group or ideology; often used with 'under'."

Young's Literal Translation of Isaiah 59:19 states that "the Spirit of Jehovah hath raised an ensign against him."  The Encarta World English Dictionary defines "ensign" as a "badge of office; an emblem or sign that indicates authority or command."

Every believer has access to God-given armor (Ephesians 6).  And when we have put on the whole armor of God (truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer), verse 13 instructs us to stand.  It doesn't say to run, quit, or fall, but to stand.  What is the protective banner under which we find the strength to stand?  The name of Jesus.

For this reason God also highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow - of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth - and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Phillippians 2:9-11 HCSB)

When the attack of the enemy overwhelms us and seems beyond our ability to withstand, we must lift high the banner of the name of Jesus and stand firmly beneath it.  You cannot stand your ground by how you feel, however; you must stand your ground by what you know.  Wrap yourself in the truth of who Jesus is and who you are in Him.  When you know that you are the righteousness of God in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21), you will stand before the enemy without fear, condemnation or anxiety.

Lord Jesus, Your name is like a strong tower that the righteous run into and are safe.  When the storms blow around me, You're the firm foundation on which to stand.  Thank You for giving me Your name - the banner I carry, the badge of authority, the name that is above every name.  I love You, Jesus.  Amen.
