We are much more concerned about someone abusing his freedom than we are about his guarding it. We are more afraid of indulging the sinful nature than we are of falling into legalism. Yet legalism does indulge the sinful nature because it fosters self-righteousness and religious pride. It also diverts us from the real issues of the Christian life by focusing on external and sometimes trivial issues.

TEMPTATION RAGES

Temptation rages, testing, probing,
searching for a sign of weakness,
ever seeking an entrance, willing,
inviting, dressing vile thoughts
in noble robes and novel rings.

But I fight back, armed with prayers,
brandishing the sword, breaking chains
by the word of God, withstanding evil,
belt and helmet bound in place,
wielding weapons of spiritual war.

Wounds I bear, and wolves surround me,
The day darkens from evil deeds.
The Lord of armies leaves the hill;
defeat seems sure, failure certain,
but dying hopes are the door of victory.
