That I May Know Him

Posted by: <@...>

[For my determined purpose is] that I may know Him [that I may progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly], and that I may in that same way come to know the power outflowing from His resurrection [which it exerts over believers], and that I may so share His sufferings as to be continually transformed [in spirit into His likeness even] to His death.  (Philippians 3:10 AMP)

A beachgoer looks out over the vastness of the ocean, considers the warmth of the sun, and curls his toes in the sand.

A surfer skims the surface of the ocean, experiences the force of the wind and the power of the waves.

A snorkeler swims a short distance from the shoreline and dips his face into the water to view the scenery beneath the surface.

A diver navigates the ocean waters, intent on leaving the surface behind to explore the aquatic life below.

A deep-sea diver leaps from his boat with abandon, knowing there are depths waiting to be discovered, and parts yet beyond his grasp.

If the ocean in this analogy is God, where would you say you fit in this intimacy scale?

Many people, like the beachgoer, know about God but never move from a mental acknowledgement of His existence to a Father/child relationship with Him through Jesus.  Others, like the surfer, know Christ as Savior and accept that God is a powerful Being, but never seek to know Him personally.  Still others, like the snorkeler, enjoy the view from the Sunday morning service, but shy away from searching out the deeper things of God.  The diver delves beneath the confines of mental knowledge to search out the truths of God's word and the wisdom of His ways.  And the deep-sea diver abandons himself in intimate exploration of God's heart, character, purposes and passions.  These are ever-increasing depths of intimacy with Father God.  Are you satisfied with where you are?  How deeply do you want to know Him?  No matter where you are in your walk with Him - from the beachgoer to the deep-sea diver - there are deeper realms of intimacy to discover.

Father God, the cry of my heart is to know You more intimately.  Take me deeper into Your presence.  One day with You is better than a thousand days anywhere else.  Open the eyes of my heart Lord that I may see You as You truly are.  I pray in Jesus' name.  Amen.
