The Final Word

Posted by: <@...>

On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side."  Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.  And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.  But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, "Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?"  Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, "Peace, be still!"  And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.  But He said to them, "Why are you so fearful?  How is it that you have no faith?"  And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, "Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!"  (Mark 4:35-41 NKJV)

Jesus' mission on this day involved crossing a lake.  On the other side, in the region of the Gerasenes, lived a man controlled by a multitude of demons.  These demons tormented the man beyond imagination and terrorized an entire region.  Can you imagine how intensely the demons trembled when Jehovah God set His face toward this man and commissioned His Son to go and set him free?

Half way across the lake, a great storm arose.  Waves tossed the ship and it began filling with water.  The disciples were terrified; Jesus slept.  "Master, don't you care?"  The question assailed the character of God.  After rebuking the wind and waves, Jesus chastised the disciples for their fear.  He had already given the word: "Let's cross over to the other side."  He didn't say, "Let's go to the middle and drown."  He was under God's authority, and not even a multitude of demons could cancel His assignment.  His word - not the storm - was the final authority, and with it, a great storm became a great calm.

Do you allow God's word to have the final verdict over your life?  Or do the storms have you beaten down and wracked with fear?  Trouble comes to us all (John 16:33) and great storms can bring great fear.  Yet there is One whose word is truth.  "Has God ever spoken and failed to act?  Has he ever promised and not carried it through?" (Number 23:19b NLT)  No matter what people say, no matter what circumstances dictate, their voice does not have the final authority - unless you allow it to.  Let God be true and every man a liar (Romans 3:4).  His word is forever settled in heaven (Psalm 119:89) and He watches to see that His word is fulfilled (Jeremiah 1:12 NIV).  Study His word and let it be your anchor in the midst of the storms of life.

Heavenly Father, there is no shadow of turning with You; You are the same yesterday, today and forever.  Your word frames the universe and keeps it in perfect precision.  You are faithful to Your promises, and I adore You.  Amen.
