The Last Supper

Posted by: <@...>

Jesus knew that he had come from God and would go back to God. He also
knew that the Father had given him complete power. So during the meal
Jesus got up, removed his outer garment, and wrapped a towel around his
waist. He put some water into a large bowl. Then he began washing his
disciples' feet and drying them with the towel he was wearing. But when
he came to Simon Peter, that disciple asked, "Lord, are you going to
wash my feet?" Jesus answered, "You don't really know what I am doing,
but later you will understand." "You will never wash my feet!" Peter
replied. "If I don't wash you," Jesus told him, "you don't really belong
to me." Peter said, "Lord, don't wash just my feet. Wash my hands and my
head." John 13:3-9 CEV

The disciples must have watched in astonished bewilderment as Jesus
removed His robe, girded Himself with a servant's towel, poured water,
and began to wash their feet - a role reserved for the lowest of
servants. Is it any wonder that Peter whispered (paraphrased
throughout), "Master, You're the Son of God! Why are You washing feet
like a lowly servant?" Can you hear the pleading in his voice? "I'll
explain later, Peter," Jesus responds calmly, perhaps without looking
up.

Peter is shaken by the scene unfolding before him as the long-awaited
Messiah kneels humbly at his feet. "But this is wrong, Lord! It should
never be this way. I won't let You do this! I won't! Please...
Master... Stand up!" Leaning back on His heels, Jesus looks into
Peter's eyes and speaks softly. "If you won't let Me wash you, our
companionship is broken, Peter." Peter's heart must have shattered like
an alabaster jar at such a horrendous thought. Hear the torrent of
loving tears in his voice as he cries out, "Lord take all of me! Wash
my feet and direct my steps; purify my hands and use them for Your
purposes; bathe my head and renew my mind to Your ways! I want Your
companionship so desperately! If I lose You, I have nothing. I don't
care if it costs me everything!"

Did you see Jesus smile?

Lord, purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean [ceremonially]; wash
me, and I shall [in reality] be whiter than snow. (Psalm 51:7 AMP)
Amen.
