THE MARK

Ignoring sin's insidious fruits, he killed;
The world's first murderer struck in devious rage.
His brother's righteous blood, afield, was spilled,
And he was doomed to wander the earth; his wage,
To never work the soil, as God so willed.
He cried he could not bear this grievous bane;
'Twas mercy's touch to stamp the mark upon Cain.
