The Pursuit of Wisdom
by J. Randal Matheny © 2014

A paraphrase of Proverbs 1.23-33

Let saving thoughts, O Wisdom, pour out!
We turn to your bracing reproof;
In streets, from rooftops, let Knowledge shout,
>From your control we’re not aloof.

To us, the simple, make it plain,
Give words to guide our faulty ways;
We’ll not reject them nor disdain
Your swift correction for all our days.

Laugh not—we hasten to obey,
We hurry to heed your true advice;
Give life and speed to these feet of clay,
Avert our dread of the devil’s price.

While still you hear, early we call,
We seek while yet you may be found,
We love your truth, the wisdom of Paul,
The patience of Job, the psalmist’s sound.

>From fear of harm, we’d be at ease,
In lands secure, and safely dwell;
We listeners, leaping by long degrees,
Are willing to learn our lessons well.
