The Quest of the Worshipper

Posted by: <@...>

Immediately I was in the Spirit, and there in heaven a throne was set.  One was seated on the throne, and the One seated looked like jasper and carnelian stone.  A rainbow that looked like an emerald surrounded the throne.  From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and thunder.  Also before the throne was something like a sea of glass, similar to crystal.  (Revelation 4:2, 3, 5a, 6a)

Imagine for just a moment climbing up Mount Zion and stepping into the throne room of Almighty God.  All around the room, angels are in motion, doing the Father's bidding.  Music comes from everywhere at once.  The sheer magnitude of God's presence overwhelms you and you fall to your face in reverence.  Holiness saturates the atmosphere, and burns through you like fire.

Jesus rises from His throne and comes to you.  You are captured by the absolute authority of His being and the intense light emanating from Him.  You cannot help but be in awe of Him.  He calls you by name and offers you His hand.  As you reach out to take it, you are reminded of the gaping holes left by spikes when He hung on the cross and paid your sin debt.  It is His perfect sacrifice that permits you to be here in this moment.  "Thank You, Lord!" you utter, though the words seem so feeble in the comparative magnitude of His sacrifice.

You make it to your feet and notice the beautiful robe that is draped over you.  Jesus explains that the robe represents His righteousness, purchased for you on the cross.  You open your mouth to reply but there are simply no words to express the gratitude of your heart.  Jesus smiles softly and brushes away the tears that have escaped your eyelids.  With reckless abandon, you throw your arms around Him and hold Him tight; He returns the hug with the same fervor.

In a voice intensely warm and gentle, Father God calls your name.  "Come, My child," He coaxes; "I've been waiting for you."  Drawn by the most amazing Love, you run into the open arms of Abba Father, where you are lifted up and placed on His lap.  Enveloped in His embrace, you gaze into the depths of His grace and drink deeply of His joy.  As you lay your head against His chest, lost in the rhythm of His great heart, you are intensely aware that this is the very thing you were created for.

That, my friends, is a word picture of worship - ascending the hill of the Lord; kneeling in reverence before Him; the transparency of being fully known yet intensely loved; the awe of His majestic presence; the inexpressible gratitude for His incomprehensible sacrifice; the loving embrace of the Bridegroom and His Bride; and the beating of Father's heart.  This is the quest of the worshipper.  May we cast aside the carefully choreographed concerts posing as Sunday morning worship and cleave instead to an impassioned pursuit of Father's presence, His person, His face.  It is for this purpose - His pleasure - that you and I were created (Revelation 4:11).

My Father, earnestly will I seek You.  I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory.  Your unfailing love is better than life itself.  I will praise You as long as I live, lifting up my hands to You.  I cling to You and sing for joy in the shadow of Your wings.  Amen. (From Psalm 63 NLT)
