WASHINGTON - President Bush is asking the children of America to help the children of Afghanistan.
He wrapped up his prime-time news conference from the White House with an appeal for children to do some fund raising to help the young victims of war in Afghanistan.

Bush is asking every child in America to send $1 to a special fund that will be administered by the Red Cross to send food and medical help to Afghan children.

He said that the money can be sent right to the White House addressed to "America's Fund for Afghan Children."

Here's the address:

America's Fund for Afghan Children
c/o White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW
Washington, D.C. 20500

Bush said that one in three Afghan children is an orphan, and almost half are malnourished.

He said even as Americans are united in the fight against terrorism, they're also united in their concern for the Afghan people.

"I want to make a special request to the children of America," Bush said. "I ask you to join in a special effort to help the children of Afghanistan. Their country has been through a great deal of war and suffering."
