Too Independent?

O our God, will You not exercise judgment
upon them? For we have no might to stand against this great company that is
coming against us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.
(2 Chronicles 20:12 Amplified)
King Jehoshaphat was in charge of a great
nation known for its independent spirit – until a large number of Moabites,
Ammonites and Meunites joined forces against them. Verse 4 says that “Judah
gathered together to ask help from the Lord; even out of all the cities of
Judah they came to seek the Lord [yearning for Him with all their desire].” The
Lord heard their heart-felt cry and gave them the supernatural battle plan. Then
“Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the
inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before the Lord, worshiping Him. And some
Levites of the Kohathites and Korahites stood up to praise the Lord, the God of
Israel, with a very loud voice” (verses 18-19). They were independent yet
dependent.
The USA celebrates its 237th birthday
today. We’re getting older, but are we getting any wiser? In the midst of
celebrating our independence from Britain, are we too proud to declare our
total dependence upon Jehovah God? Our founding fathers sought freedom of
religion; are we settling today for freedom from religion? We ask God to bless America, but is America
too self-absorbed to bless God? Perhaps
we should learn a lesson from Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah and set ourselves
[determinedly, as our vital need] to seek the Lord (verse 3). If we
will, He has promise He will hear our cry.
“If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble
themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn
from their wicked ways, then will I hear
from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 AmplifiedTo subscribe: <adevotionalgroup-subscribe@welovegod.org>
