Yeshua
answered them, “Yes, indeed! I tell you that everyone who practices sin is a
slave of sin. Now a slave does not remain with a family forever, but a son does
remain with it forever. So if the Son frees you, you will really be free!
John 8:34-36
(Complete Jewish Bible)

The eighth chapter of John begins
with the scribes and Pharisees bringing to Jesus a woman caught in the act of
adultery. In doing so, her very private sin became a very public matter. Her
life hung in the balance, and yet the scene unfolding in the temple actually had
little to do with her. Although she was guilty, she was merely bait
for the Pharisaic trap being laid for Jesus – and Jesus knew it.

She was put on display in the middle
of the temple court as verbal accusations swirled. The expected sentence was just
as undeniable as her guilt: the Law of Moses said she should be stoned. I can
imagine her staring at the ground, her mind racing with utter fear, refusing to
meet the scornful gazes encircling her. So Jesus went to the level of her
sight. He stooped down and started writing on the ground. She must have been as deeply
intrigued about what He wrote as we are today.

“The
one of you who is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her,”
she heard Him say. Her accusers began to leave, one
by one, the older ones first,
leaving the
woman standing there with Jesus – the only perfect One in the room. And then
came the most beautiful words she had ever heard:
“Neither do I condemn you. Now go, and
don’t sin anymore.”

She
wasn’t expecting grace. She wasn’t seeking forgiveness. She was searching for
love. She found that and so much more in God’s only perfect Son. All she needed
was Jesus. The Son made her free - really and unquestionably free.
