update on my friend Jan

Posted by: marmali <marmali@...>

While visiting with my friend Jan at church today, I told her I would try to visit her this week. I asked if she had any appointments on certain days. She said "those ladies come see me whenever they want." I asked, "What ladies?" She said the ones from Hospice. I was shocked to say the least. I asked what she was talking about. She said she had been put on end of life care. Well, I was flabbergasted and couldn't even begin to absorb what she was saying. Last time we talked at length, she was doing awesome, getting stronger and better every day. Another Sunday, she had told me about hurting so bad it made her cry, but I never got a chance to ask what pain she was having.

I called her son when I got home to find out the situation. He said Jan had an MRI two or three months ago which showed spots in her brain and liver. She talked to her oncologist who told her that since she didn't want to do any more chemo, and has already had radiation to her brain, there are no other options. Jan has done chemo and radiation, but the cancer has returned more than once. Both chemo and radiation made her very sick and weak.

Right now, a lady from Hospice visits Jan at her house (maybe once a week?) and does whatever Jan needs. The doctor said to go ahead and get her linked up with them so that when she needs their care, everything is in place. Her balance is being affected, so she's had some falls. Today, she was limping and her voice sounded like she had laryngitis. Her son said the voice and limp have been going on for a couple of weeks. He said her liver hurts bad at times, but if his dad massages the liver, it is better.

I am so thankful Jan is a strong Christian, that she truly loves the Lord. Even when she told me about Hospice and end-of-life care, she seemed peaceful and didn't get upset or anything. I know she is looking forward to no more suffering, no more fighting. I wasn't prepared to hear this today, so I'm stunned and can't even imagine not having Jan here. She was 59 in June and was first diagnosed a month before she turned 50.

Jan's son says she needs a miracle. I ask that you pray for a miracle for Jan for all the cancer to be TOTALLY gone. Pray also for peace and comfort.

Thanks,
Lisa NM
