Wedding ring + 6-string

Posted by: rik.osborne66 <rik.osborne66@...>

Hey all -

I've been married for less than a year, and before I got married I never wore jewelry of any kind. Now, I almost never wear my wedding ring outside of church and other social situations - being a cook for a living, a ring is unsanitary (it's funny how the whole health code takes a step back and makes exceptions for wedding rings). I don't wear my ring at work.
And after so many years of being single (having waited to get married until I was almost 50), and having spent my whole bass playing career playing without a ring on ...
I've been playing my 6-string bass while my Jazz is in the pawnshop. And I have discovered that wearing my wedding ring on my left hand just does not work when I'm playing a 6-string bass. With the wide neck, the ring clatters all over the G and C strings. So, when I'm playing in church, I move my wedding ring to the ring finger of my right hand. There, it doesn't interfere with my bass playing.
I really hate wearing a ring. I even quit wearing a watch, years before I got a cell phone, because it interfered with my work as a cook (I was getting a rash under the watch and it's band).
Given my age when I finally got married, I'm almost tempted to rail against the concept of wedding rings (except my wife would object). On the other hand, while my wife was in the hospital a while back, we met a male nurse who, instead of wearing a wedding ring (for the same sanitary reasons I don't wear mine when I'm cooking) had his left ring finger tattooed with a ring. That was his wedding ring. I thought that was awesome, but, despite being in my 20s in the 1990s, I remain un-tattooed to this day, and have no desire to get tattooed.
So, fellow bassists, how do the rest of you deal with playing a 6-string with a wedding ring?
