The original diet given by God to man is found in Genesis 1:29. We were given "every herb bearing seed,...and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed." Seems like this would include herbs, grains, seeds, nuts and fruits. Today we would call this "vegan". The next verse explains that the animals (beasts and birds) were given green herbs (grass, hay, leaves etc.) for food. Gen. 1:30 says God saw it and "it was very good". Somewhere it says that in the earth made new the carnivorous animals will eat straw like the ox. (Loose paraphrase)--maybe someone would like to research that text.
