Where Did My Baby Go?
"But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me." (II Samuel 12:23)
I recently received a phone call from a friend of a young woman who was enduring a great tragedy. Her baby, which she had carried for some months, had died. No, she did not have an abortion, nor did anyone harm her unborn baby. For whatever reason, her baby just died. Now, she faces the great heartache and grieving of the loss of her child whom she had never gotten to hold alive.
If we ask "Why?" as it relates to such difficult matters, we ask one of the hardest questions there is in this life. However, if we ask "Where?" we will probably fair much better with finding a biblical answer and approach even closer to answering the why. Still, I for one will not claim to know all the answers to such questions.
When David spoke the words of our text he was acknowledging the fact that the death of his infant child was only a temporary separation. But, this was only true in the case that David himself made it into Heaven in the end. You see, this truth relates to the case of Job's sons and daughters, who all went to Heaven in one day (for explanation see my very first Bible Note entitled, "Job's Animals and Children"). For, as Job's responsible children made it to heaven through obedience in Old Testament sacrifices and faith in the future work of Christ, even so the innocent unborn and infants are covered by the atoning work of Christ since they do not even know right and wrong.
Yes, it was true that David's infant could not return to him in this life from death's tragic door. But, it was also true that David could go to be with God and his infant once David's time in this world was over. Therefore, we see biblical support for the idea that babies do indeed go to be with God.
Whether they are killed by abortion or some accident, or die of some illness, this truth should be a comfort to every mother and father who suffers the pain of separation from their child. Some may say, "Why do you include those that have been aborted? Their mothers didn't want them!". That may have been true at the time, but the majority - if not all - who have had an abortion suffer, because deep down inside their very motherly desires and sense of reality cause them to suffer the loss.
Also, the fathers in many cases did not want the baby aborted. All of these dear souls need to know what happens to innocent babies. They went to be with God and He will take care of them. We should all get right with God and make it to Heaven. Oh, what wonderful reunions we shall see when Jesus raptures the church and all the saints are reunited with their loved ones who have "fallen asleep in Christ" (I Corinthians 15).
If I am given the great responsibility of preaching this baby's funeral or memorial service, I am contemplating a simple sermon entitled, "With God". With God is this little one. With God are all the reasons why. With God is the answer and comfort to all our earthly sorrows. With God is all the strength and grace we need to make it to "the city whose builder and maker is God".
This young woman's child went to be with God. The why of such an issue is to be found in the same place as the where -- in the very presence and wisdom of almighty God. Let us seek to be with Him here on earth so that we may dwell with Him in Heaven forever!
