Worshiping God, part 2
Introduction1. when God rescued Israel from the Egyptians at the Red
Sea, Israel sang a song of celebration, Ex 15
2. when God delivered David from the hand of all his
enemies, he sang a song of celebration, II Sam 22
3. when God redeemed man from sin, Heaven sang a song,
Rev 15:1,3-4
4. Singing is a natural way to worship God
5. We are continuing our study of worship..celebration
in song.
I. Kinds of Singing
1. singing that praises God, Ps 47:1-9, Ps 96:1-6
"Hallelujah Praise Jehovah" "Praise God From Whom
All Blessings Flow"
2. singing that thanks the Lord, Ps 9:1-2, Ps 100:1-5
Ps 138:1-2
"Thank You, Lord" "Heavenly Father we appreciate you"
3. singing that entreats God. Ps 5:1-3, Ps 51:1-4, 10-13
"Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" "Be with me, Lord"
4. singing that encourages each other, Eph 5:19, Col 3:16
"Live for Jesus" "Let Him have His way with thee".
II. We are to sing with the spirit
1. John 4:23,24
a. "the truth" = as the New Testament directs
b. "in spirit" = with correct understanding and
attitude
c. it is possible to sing "in truth" and not "in
spirit"
2. Quote: J.C. Goodpasture
"the public worship in song is often rendered in-
effective and empty of any real good to the singer
because, while he may be calling the words and keeping
the tune, he is not thinking at all of the meaning of
what he sings, and he is making no application of the
sentiment of the song to his own heart or spirit.
Sometimes the attention of the singer is given wholly
to the sound of his own voice, with absolutely no
regard to the meaning of words which he is singing.
Such singing is certainly vain worship, for it
produces none of the effect that real worship in song
is intended to produce. Such worship is vain, for it
is lacking in spirit. It is mere empty sound while the
meaning of the song has no power to edify the soul of
the singer because he does not at all realize its
meaning. Public worship in song, not to be vain, must
be sung in spirit ... that is, from the heart, with the
heart meaning just what the song says. And it must be
sung making melody...that is, music in the heart. The
attention must be centred upon the sentiment of the
song, and the heart of the singer must respond to the
meaning of the song, if any real benefit is derived
from the singing."
3. Music is a very important part of worship
a. it can calm us, excite us, and instruct us.
b. song leaders should select their songs carefully..
prayerfully.
c. the value music has upon us depends on our own heart.Closing:
Most song books have several "invitation" songs.
a. they are designed to encourage the singers to
examine their own personal lives and to respond to
God's invitation.Check out some of those songs
b. think carefully about the songs you sing.
c. if you need to respond to God's call...obey
