Spared from Trouble

No grave trouble will overtake the righteous, But the wicked shall
be filled with evil. – Proverbs 12:21 NKJV.

You have indeed defeated Edom, and your heart has lifted you up.
Glory
in that, and stay at home; for why should you meddle with trouble so
that you fall—you and Judah with you? – 2 Kings 14:10 NKJV.

And the Lord said to me,
“Amos, what do you see?”

And I said, “A plumb line.”

Then the Lord said:

“Behold, I am setting a plumb line

In the midst of My people Israel;

I will not pass by them anymore. – Amos 7:8 NKJV.

Years ago, when I had only been in the oilfield a few years, about 2am I
was awakened by a phone call. After I had finished talking with whoever had
called, and hung up the phone, Jeanie asked me who had called. I had no idea;
the whole phone call was a blank in my mind. I knew I had answered the phone
and talked to someone; but had no idea who it was, or what it was about. As it
turned out, trouble had passed me by.

The next day, I found out from my friend, David at work, that he had been
the one who had called. He had taken his drill pipe inspection unit to the
lake. It was a two-ton truck with a large enclosed utility bed. He had gotten
the truck stuck and had called me for help. Since I never came, he called
another friend who was a forklift operator. This was a large forklift used for
moving heavy pipe and had to be transported on a semi. The forklift got bogged
down in the mud too. I don’t remember now how they got the truck and forklift unstuck,
I think they had to rent a bulldozer. Certainly, trouble passed me by that
night!

The point of Proverbs 12:21 is not that no trouble will ever come to the righteous; but by living a
righteous life, you will be spared from much trouble. In
Amos 7:8, we have the will-known
plumb line passage of Scripture. From this passage we know that God had spared Israel
in the past from judgment and had allowed trouble to pass them by previously.

In 2 Kings 14 we see that Amaziah the king of Judah is thinking that he is something
great. Amaziah through the power of God had a great victory over Edom. Because
of that, Amaziah thought that he was invincible, and sent a message to Jehoash
king of Israel demanding he send Israel’s army to meet the army of Judah in
battle. Jehoash with great wisdom and compassion responds to Amaziah with this
message:
You have indeed defeated Edom,
and your heart has lifted you up. Glory
in that, and stay at home; for why should you meddle with trouble so
that you fall—you and Judah with you? – 2 Kings 14:10 NKJV.

Amaziah would not listen to reason. The result was the utter defeat of Amaziah
and Judah. Here is what happened as recorded in
2 Kings 14:11-14: “Therefore Jehoash king of Israel went out; so he
and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another at Beth Shemesh, which belongs to Judah.

And Judah was defeated by
Israel, and every man fled to his tent.

Then Jehoash king of Israel
captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, at Beth
Shemesh; and he went to Jerusalem, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from
the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate—four hundred cubits.

And he took all the gold
and silver, all the articles that were found in the house of the

Lord and in the treasuries of the king’s
house, and hostages, and returned to Samaria.

Living a righteous life is a life that God will
bless. You may not realize it, and it may not seem like it at the time, but by
doing so you are sparing yourself from much trouble. Trouble is passing you by
when you refuse to
meddle with trouble.”
