Getting What You Want

So Abram said to Lot, "Please let there be no strife between you and me, and
between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren. Is not the whole
land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will
go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left."
And Lot lifted his eyes and saw all the plain of Jordan, that it was well
watered everywhere (before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah) like the
garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar. Then Lot
chose for himself all the plain of Jordan, and Lot journeyed east. And they
separated from each other. Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt
in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom. But
the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD. -
Genesis 13:8-13.

The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar. Then the LORD rained
brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens.
So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the
cities, and what grew on the ground. - Genesis 19:23-25.

The actor, Nicolas Cage, has been arrested for domestic abuse and disturbing
the peace in New Orleans. The arrest occurred after he had a loud argument
with his wife, Alice Kim. A cab driver saw the two verbally sparring on a
street corner and called police. Reportedly, Cage also shoved Kim, and it
appeared the confrontation was becoming violent. However, Kim denies that
her husband shoved her. At first, police officers tried to have Cage and his
wife leave the scene, and just go home. Then, Cage, yelled at the officers
what he really wanted, "Why don't you just arrest me?" Officers then gave
Cage what he wanted; they arrested him. (As reported on Fox News and
countless other news venues - April 2011)

If you remember the story of Abraham and Lot, Abraham appeared to be the
protector of his nephew. When their herds of livestock had grown too large
for the two families to dwell together, Abraham offered a solution. He
allowed Lot first choice as to where he wanted to live. Lot decided that he
wanted to live in Sodom and Lot got what he wanted. Sodom was a miserable
place to live, and in 2 Peter 2:7-8 we are told that God ".delivered
righteous Lot (out of Sodom), who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the
wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous
soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)." Lot got
what he wanted, but lost almost everything, as a result. He lost his home,
he lost daughters (Genesis 19:14), and he lost his wife who turned into a
pillar of salt when she looked back (Genesis 19:26).

Sometimes we gain what we think that we want, and we are left with very
little. Nicolas Cage, gained another arrest record, and a stay in a jail
cell for a while. Lot gained much pain and heartache, after receiving what
he wanted. The Israelites wanted a king, and God let them have one.

When we examine our plans and goals in life, it is always best to allow the
light of God's Word to fall upon them. Is what we have planned, is our goals
in life, something that will bring honor and glory to God? If not, God may
allow you to receive what you want, which will be a whole lot of nothing; or
possibly as Lot found out, something far worse.
