Helping Hands

For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one
body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were
all baptized into one body - whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or
free - and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. For in fact the body
is not one member but many. - 1 Corinthians 12:12-14.

Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. - 1 Corinthians
12:27.

For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as
the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and
of His bones. - Ephesians 5:29-30

You have most likely seen the video and heard all about the rescue of a
motorcyclist that occurred Monday. It happened in Utah when 21-year-old
Brandon Wright crashed into a BMW coming out of a parking lot. Wright did
lay the bike down in an attempt to avoid the car, but still hit it, and both
vehicles caught fire. Wright was trapped underneath of the BMW. That's when
about ten bystanders jumped into action, lifting the car on one side, while
Wright was dragged out from under the BMW. Wright was not riding a helmet,
but does not have any trauma to his head. He does have a couple of broken
legs, his pelvis is broken, burns on a foot, and some road rash. His
condition has been upgraded to satisfactory after being moved from intensive
care. (Fox News, CNN, youtube, and various other news venues)

It is such a wonderful, awesome thing to see all of those people risking
their lives to save someone that none of them knew! With all of the
terrible, ugly, awful news that we continually hear and see, it was simply
fantastic to see this video! This is what the body of Christ, i.e. the
church, should be all about.

Together, believers can always do more than by themselves. We can do more in
prayer. Jesus says in Matthew 18:19-20, "Again I say to you that if two of
you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for
them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in
My name, I am there in the midst of them." We can do more in giving. An
example of this is the Southern Baptist Cooperative Program. Those churches
participating in the program give a percentage of all of their undesignated
offerings to it. The program funds missionary efforts across the world, and
of every penny given in a participating church, part of it combine with
others to fund these efforts. We can do more in helping during major
disasters as we see many denominations come together along with the Red
Cross to meet the needs of the hurting.

Perhaps the most often used quote, about the hands and feet of Jesus, are
the words of Saint Teresa of Avila, "Christ has no body on earth but yours,
no hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours are the eyes through which
Christ's compassion for the world is to look out; yours are the feet with
which He is to go about doing good; and yours are the hands with which He is
to bless us now."

For those of us who make up the Body of Christ, Casting Crowns asks in their
song these questions:

But if we are the Body
Why aren't His arms reaching
Why aren't His hands healing
Why aren't His words teaching
And if we are the Body
Why aren't His feet going
Why is His love not showing them there is a way

There are still people who care, who want to do the right thing as we have
seen demonstrated in the rescue of the motorcyclist. If you had been there,
what would you have done? What will you do today, as part of the Body of
Christ?

been online since January 31, 1998. On June 8, 1998 the email version of the
Burning Bush Devotional was first sent. Ed Wrather began writing devotionals
in the early 1990s. The distribution of these first devotionals was
primarily through the Burning Bush Newsletter sent to prison facilities
throughout the United States and Canada.

Many prayer needs are posted at the Burning Bush website on the Prayer
Request page. You can also post your prayer requests there and they will be
forwarded to the Burning Bush Prayer Group (Of course, I am always in need
of prayer - please pray for me.). Please pray for our grandson, Mason
Wrather, who will be having a surgery September 19. Please pray a member of
our church who is battling cancer, Connie Bryan.

If you are not my friend on facebook or myspace you can be, just add me. The
devotionals are posted in my blogs on those two social networks and you can
leave comments, feedback about them there. There are other social networks
designed just for Christians, however, this is an outreach project to reach
those who may not know the Lord or may have wandered away. You can help me
reach out to them.
