{GEAR} Dean Basses, less than impressive bassists, and my gig

I thought of a title for the "Chronicles" biography: We Are Nearly
Players (Rush fans and Marc should get that one;-).

Anyway, my gig on the 31st went pretty well. My tone was perfect (to
me), I was able to hear the whole band clearly, and I made only one
mistake, which was pretty good for only two practices and 10 new songs
(though I had played a few of the songs about a dozen years ago, which
helped). I still didn't have that opening part on "If You Want To"
right, but I doubt anybody knew it. Despite Donl's laws of physics, the
4x10" EV actually worked pretty well, though I think I would have been
marginally happier had I brought Mark's Whappo Jr. instead. It was an
outdoor gig, and I was afraid of rain, so I took my own cab (Boy is it
heavy; I had to carry it about 50 feet across a field from the stage to
my wife's car). My freshly retubed Mesa 400 is just too good, and the
frankenJazz just gets better each gig. I sold my '96 Stingray and I
don't even miss it. In fact, it paid for my tubes (and bills), so I'm
better off without it. The stage was way too cramped; I was set up right
behind the 350+ pound keyboardist/guitarist in a space that makes a
port-o-let seem roomy, so I just stood very still the whole gig. Anyway,
we were supposed to do 11 songs, but this funny smell occured about
midway through song 10, and then we saw the smoke coming out of an EAW
subwoofer. Ouch. End of set. The sound guy had bragged about having over
2200 watts pumping through the speakers....yet I can't help but feel it
was my bass that specifically smoked it. Stangely, I feel a little proud
of that;-)
