(CB)[TECH & GEAR] Neophyte Soundguy (Again)

Posted by: praisebass <praisebass@...>

Hi, Everyone;
Thanks, everyone for the tips, but I do have a few new
questions...First, what is a CAT-5? (I have one cat, and that's quite
enough, thank you...) Also, back several years ago, when our tape copier
blew up, our former soundguy decided, that instead of buying a new tape
copier (for about $2000.00), he'd just go to Best Buy and buy about 4
cassette decks. They are plugged into our sub-outs, and I guess that's
why we only have 2 monitor channels. I'd like to change this, but since
I'm the '2nd string' soundguy, I'm going to have to get the Chief
Soundguy, and my Worship leader to sign on to this idea. I could use
some prayer here... What I'd really like to see is 6 monitor
channels, and if I can do it with just the Mackie, that would make it a
lot easier, I'd just have to figure out a different way to record the
master tape of the service. Going with powered monitors is an idea that
I had considered, does anyone have a brand or model that they prefer? We
tried the IEM's back a couple of years ago, and half of the vocalists
wouldn't use them (you know how vocalists can be), mine made my bass
sound like a $49.00 pawnshop special (so I went to a good set of regular
headphones, which helped a lot), and the guitarist put one in his ear,
and left one out (so he could hear the floor wedge.) Finally, we got
tired of it, and just quit using them all together.
We had planned on putting in a 32-channel snake, but that's still up in
the air. Also, there's some question of how we're going to get the snake
up to the stage, without makingh the sanctuary look like a concert venue
(wires and duct tape all over.)
Our main speakers are a set of 3-way systems, with a15" low, an 8" mid,
and a horn tweeter, set in a trapezoidal enclosure, flying about 20 feet
over, and just in front of the stage. We have 4 side fills, which are
12", 2-way Yamaha enclosures spaced along the side of the sanctuary
facing toward the middle and the rear (the auditorium is 'cathedral
style'-long and narrow). One of the Crown amps is a power base, but it
hasn't blown up yet, so I'm going to leave it alone. We are running
mono, with no effects. If anyone has any ideas (especially about how to
free up those subouts by doing the recording a different way) Id sure
like to hear them...And thanks for the help you've all been, I really
appreciate it!
