ON THE ROAD
Life of Christ #58
Last week in our study of the Life of Christ we saw the events that took place at the tomb on Easter Sunday Morning. This week we see Jesus On the Road as he ministers to hurting, confused, and disillusioned disciples.
As we watch Jesus minister to these disciples, we will be reminded of what Jesus does for us in our times of trouble.
JESUS LISTENS Vss. 13-24
Vss. 13-14 The events of the last few days were discussed by Cleopas and his companion. You can imagine that it was about all they could talk about. These were troubling events, and often when we are troubled, we will talk about those things which are on our minds.
Vs. 15 Jesus came up to them and walked with them.
He probably appeared to be another pilgrim on his way home from the Passover feast in Jerusalem.
Vs. 16 They were supernaturally prevented from knowing who Jesus was. Mark 16:12
We need to remember that Jesus is with us no matter where we go. His Spirit has taken up residence inside of us. He is with us no matter what. Matthew 28:20
Vs. 17 Jesus asked them, What are you talking about that you are so sad about?
Did Jesus know the answer to His question before He asked it? Of course he did!
Why then did He ask it? He wanted them to talk to Him. He was the one with the answer to their sorrow.
You have been told since you were little that you can talk to God and/or Jesus whenever you have a need. In fact, the Bible often tells us to pour our hearts out to God. 1 Peter 5:6-7, Hebrews 4:14-16
Vs. 18 Cleopas is incredulous! He is amazed that even a stranger in Jerusalem hadnt heard of what had gone on in Jerusalem over the last few days.
Vs. 19 Jesus is drawing the two disciples out. He wants them to talk, to explain what is troubling him.
We need to realize that Jesus wants us to talk because He will listen as we pour out our hearts to Him.
They begin by saying that the things concerned Jesus of Nazareth. He calls Jesus a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. Indeed Jesus was mighty in word and deed!
Vs. 20 These disciples blame the chief priests and rulers of the people for the death of Jesus.
Werent Pilate and therefore the Roman government responsible too?
Yes they were.
But responsibility for the death of Jesus began with the chief priests and rulers who had Jesus betrayed, arrested, tried, and carted off to Pilate to be condemned and crucified, because they did not have the authority to put anyone to death.
Allow me to remind you that it was not just these people who put Jesus to death. It was you and I who also put Jesus on the cross. He went because of our sins! Romans 5:8
Vs. 21 Here Cleopas expresses disillusionment. They had thought that Jesus was Israels redeemer. They had believed that He was the Messiah, the Anointed One of God. They expected Him to redeem Israel.
They were expecting Jesus to establish the Kingdom of God on earth and to overthrow the Roman bondage they were under.
All the hopes of the followers of Jesus were dashed. They were a defeated group!
Vss. 21-24 There was another problem. It was the third day. The body was missing. Some of the believing women had seen angles that proclaimed that Jesus was alive. The tomb was checked by the men and found to be empty indeed. But they had not seen Jesus.
Cleopas was speaking. Jesus listened. Jesus allowed the man to talk and get it all out, frustration and all.
Whenever you are frustrated and defeated like Cleopas, do what Cleopas did. Pour out that frustration before the Lord.
He will hear, and He will answer.
JESUS LISTENS Vss. 13-24
JESUS REBUKES Vss. 25-26
Vs. 25 There are times in our lives when we need a good, strong rebuke! Nothing but a strong reprimand will do to get us straightened out!
Jesus tells them that they are foolish and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets had spoken. They had believed some of it, but not all of it!
When we do not believe the word of God in the heart we are foolish! When we do not believe all that God has said we are foolish!
Jesus is rebuking their unbelief!
How often Jesus had to rebuke the unbelief of the disciples!
How often the prophets had to rebuke Israel for her unbelief!
How often as we read the Word of God and hear sermons and Sunday School lessons are we rebuked for our own unbelief!
All too often, we are selective believers.
We do not believe the whole Bible, just the parts we like!
Matthew 7:21 - Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Make sure that you believe all that the prophets have spoken. Allow Jesus to rebuke you through His Word and through his pastors and teachers.
Vs. 26 Jesus is clearly teaching that the Old Testament taught that the Messiah would suffer and enter into His glory. I think of a classic example of this in Isaiah 53:10-12
JESUS INSTRUCTS Vs. 27
Vs. 27 Ive heard some pretty good sermons in my time
Ive sat in on some excellent Bible studies.
But this message was one that I wish I had heard in person.
Jesus went through the Old Testament Scriptures, simply explaining how they point to Himself.
It is a good possibility that Jesus started with the Book of Genesis. Genesis 3:15, 22:8
I imagine that Jesus talked about the Passover Lamb, and how the sacrifices that God required of the Jews were pictures of His own sacrifice for sin.
Surely Jesus explained Psalm 22 and pointed to His words on the cross that were a fulfillment of that prophecy. Psalm 22:1
There are many references to Christ in the prophets besides Isaiah 53. Here are a couple more:
Isaiah 52:13-15, Zechariah. 12:10
Jesus took the time to instruct these men thoroughly in the Word of God concerning Himself.
There is no Bible teacher or preacher in the world like the Lord Jesus. However God has given to the church gifted men who are able to teach and preach Gods Word. Ephesians 4:11-12
I am one of those who has been gifted and called to preach and teach. It is an awesome responsibility. 2 Timothy 4:2, James 3:1
God has sent you preachers and teachers of the Word. It is your responsibility to listen and obey what Gods Word says! Hebrews 13:17
JESUS APPEARS Vss. 28-35
Vs. 28-29 Bible Class was over. They had arrived in Emmaus. Jesus as if he acted to go further, but they compelled him to stay and eat with them. This was traditional hospitality.
Vss. 30-31 Jesus appeared to them as they ate. He then vanished.
Notice that Jesus had made himself known through the Word, and then they saw Him clearly.
Vs. 32 Notice the effect Gods word has when we are receptive to it! It burns within us.
It burns with conviction.
It burns with comfort.
It burns with commitment.
It burns with joy.
And you will see Jesus clearly the more you read, listen to, and apply Gods Word to your life. He will appear to you!
Vss. 33-35 Immediately, they returned to Jerusalem to report that Jesus had risen indeed.
They went back to share what they had seen and heard!
And you my friend can not share what you have not seen.
For you to share your faith, you must have faith.
For you to share the Scriptures with those who need it, you need to see Jesus in the Scriptures.

We do know that there were four lepers who were wise enough to share Gods Blessings with others.
They are a great challenge to us that we should not about sharing the great blessing of salvation that has been given to us!

RETURNING HERO
Modern American society does not choose its heroes well. Many of the people that have been seen as heroes, especially in the area of sports, have not been good role models.
The Bible, however, shows us some true heroes of the Faith, including a little know Christian named Epaphroditus. Epaphroditus had been sent by the Philippians to bring Paul a financial gift, and evidently to stay with Paul as an assistant. Paul unselfishly thought it necessary to return Epaphroditus back to his home church. In this passage we see Epaphroditus as:
WORKING WITH PAUL - Vs. 25
Epaphroditus showed himself to be a valuable brother and worker in Christ.
WEAKENED BY SICKNESS - Vss. 26-28
He was so sick that he almost died.
WORTHY OF HONOR - Vss. 29-30
He was to be held in esteem because of his unselfish behavior.

I need your help. God has given me a great privilege and a great responsibility by calling me to be your pastor. I would love to tell you that I'm the perfect pastor, but I'm not. I would love to tell you that I'm sinless, but I'm not. I would love to tell you that I need no help, but I do.
I would like to share with you some of the God-given responsibilities of a pastor, as shown to us in Hebrews 13:7&17. Then, I would like to share with you two ways that you can help. One is pretty obvious, the other may surprise you.
In our text there are five responsibilities of the pastor mentioned.
YOUR PASTOR IS A RULER - Remember them which have the rule over you,
The author of the Book of Hebrews is evidently referring to church leaders, pastors or elders who were now deceased.
Notice that God's design was that there would be men who would lead or rule in the church.
When Paul and Barnabas went on their first missionary journey they backtracked, partially so they could appoint leaders, or rulers in each church. Acts 14:21-23, 1 Timothy 5:17
I want you to note something. The pastor is one of several leaders in the church. Apparently, there was always more than one elder in a church. In our church we have three elders besides the pastor, plus the deacons and trustees who serve on the church council. 1 Peter 5:1-3
Peter is telling us:
The elder is to feed or shepherd the flock of God.
The elder is to willingly look over the flock of God.
The elder is not to be in it for the money.
The elder is not to be a dictator, but an example.
YOUR PASTOR IS A REPRESENTATIVE - who have spoken unto you the word of God:
The pastors in the Book of Hebrews had communicated the Word of God.
The Pastor, if he is truly a man of God, has been chosen by God to speak for God.
This is an awesome responsibility!
Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2 - Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
How important is preaching?
1 Corinthians 1:18 - For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
Going right along with preaching is the responsibility of making sure that men and women are trained in the things of God.
2 Tim. 2:1-2 - Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. [2] And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
And while a pastor is responsible to teach all, there is help available for him. The older, Godly women of the church should be training the younger women. Titus 2:3-5
YOUR PASTOR IS A ROLE MODEL - whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
Like I said earlier, the pastors referred to here were probably deceased. The readers of Hebrews, therefore, were to remember the faith of these pastors and the outcome of the way they lived.
A pastor is to practice the faith He preaches.
A pastor should live the way he is telling his congregation to live.
1 Timothy 4:12 - Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
1 Timothy 4 has another verse that comforts and encourages me. It assures the pastor that if he is faithful in two areas, he will be a success.
1 Timothy 4:16 - Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
First, the Pastor is to be take care of himself.
He needs to strive to be right with God.
He needs to strive to be obedient.
He needs to strive to live in the power of the Holy Spirit.
He needs to strive to avoid sin.
He needs to strive to walk with God.
Second, the Pastor is to pay attention to his doctrine, that is to his teaching. The pastor needs to spend hours in the study, making sure that he's ready to preach and teach. And for this pastor that's usually four times a week, morning and evening services, Sunday School, and Prayer Meeting.
God says, if the pastor watches his own life and his own teaching, he will be a success!
As a member of the congregation you have a right and a responsibility to examine the pastor's life.
Particularly his faith, and the outcome of his life.
Examining the pastors life, looking at his behavior, is not so you can criticize but so you can learn.
Look at the pastor's behavior during difficult times.
Look at the pastor's family, although realizing that no family is perfect.
Look at the pastor's marriage and the way he treats his wife.
Look at the way the pastor conducts his business.
Look how the pastor deals with his failures and sins. Is he truly repentant? Will he apologize and make things right when he offends people?
And when you look at these, please don't look for perfection, look for growth!
Like every other person, I have my blind spots. If you feel there is a way that I am not living up to these requirements, please talk to me, because I want to do what pleases the Lord.
YOUR PASTOR IS RESPONSIBLE - Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls,
In verse 7, the author was probably referring to leaders who were dead. In Vs. 17 he is referring to those who are alive.
A soul is eternal.
A soul lives forever in Heaven or hell.
So, a pastor is first watching for souls, so that they will come to know Jesus Christ as Savior.
A pastor also knows that each Christian will stand before the Judgment seat of Christ and answer for his behavior as a Christian. He wants things to go well for that person.
So a pastor is to be watching! 2 Timothy 4:5
The pastor needs to be watching for the Christian's Spiritual growth.
The pastor needs to be watching that the Christian does not go astray.
The pastor needs to be watching for the Christian to deal with sin in his life.
The pastor needs to be watching so the Christian does not get discouraged and give up.
The pastor needs to be watching so that the Christian will be all that God wants him to be.
The pastor watches as he observes the Christian's manner of life.
The pastor watches as he listens to a Christian's speech.
The pastor watches as he teaches and preaches the Word of God.
The pastor watches as he prays. 1 Peter 4:7
There is a requirement for each member of the congregation.
Each congregation member is to obey and submit to the ones who are watching for their souls.
Of most importance is obedience to and submission to the Word of God as it is taught.
If the pastor is accurately teaching the Word of God, his teaching, his leadership is to be followed.
Why?
Because the pastor is watching for your soul!
YOUR PASTOR IS A REPORTER - as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
The pastor will give account for his ministry and be rewarded accordingly.
But according to this passage the pastor will also report on those he has pastored.
In a sense, the pastor reports now, as he prays.
Sometimes he can pray with joy.
Sometimes he can pray as grieved.
I believe, however that the real reporting will come at the Judgment Seat of Christ. It is there that rewards will be given.
2 Corinthians 5:10 - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
If the pastors you have can report joyfully about you, it will be profitable for you.
If the pastor you have had report with grief, that will be unprofitable for you.
Looking at the sober responsibilities of the pastor, I need your help.
First, the obvious request. Please pray for me that I will be the pastor that God wants me to be.
Second, please let me help you.
Let me teach you.
Let me train you.
Or, let me see that you are trained.
The more services you attend the more you are letting me train you or see that you are trained.
Your participation in our men and women's training sessions will hopefully help you as well.
I am to watch for your soul. Help me, please, to do it well.
