And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. John 17, 11. 12.

Thoughts on John's Gospel (172)

As we have already indicated, in chapters 13 to 17 of John's gospel, the Lord regards Himself as having the work of the cross already behind Him.
Here He speaks of being no longer in the world Himself, but He had to have His own behind, and they needed to be kept by the Father. He addresses His Father as "Holy Father" in this instance that has to do with the preservation that would be granted them.
The Father's holy character should encourage the children of God to walk in holiness themselves according to the word in 1 Peter 1, 15. 16: "Be ye holy, for I am holy". The result is the happy unity of believers. As they continue on the pathway of seperation from the world and guard against evil and the wicked one, both morally and doctrinally, they will be one in deed and thought, walking towards a common goal. The realization of unity in this way is full in keeping with the Lord's wishes. It is, however, quite different from the form of unification that human organization seeks to achieve in present-day Christendom.
