Dr. Curt Scarborough, President FreeWay Foundation May 28, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

During the second quarter of 2004 we shall continue studying from my "Personal & Practical" notes on
Genesis 26-38 and Matthew 14-26. I shall continue these studies for several months.
In This Issue:
"Massacre at Shechem"
"One Bride for Seven Brothers"
Opportunities for furthering Education

Massacre at Shechem
(Genesis 34:1-31)

I. Concentration: on the characters involved in this tragic episode
1. Dinah, v. 1 - daughter of Leah, Genesis 30:21.
2. Jacob, v. 1 - Father of Dinah.
3. Hamor, v. 2 - ruler of the territory; father of Shechem.
4. Shechem, v. 2 - son of Hamor; his father's capital city was named for him.
5. Simeon and Levi - Dinah's brothers, v. 25; Genesis 29:32-33; 30:21.
II. Meditation: on the events in this chapter
1. Shechem raped Dinah; then asked his father, Hamor, to get her for his wife,
vv. 2-4, 8-12.
2. Jacob and his sons were grieved and angry; they plotted revenge, vv. 5-7.
3. Jacob's sons agreed to allow Dinah to marry Shechem, who was not a Jew,
if all the males in the city would be circumcised, vv. 13-24.
4. On the third day after the surgery, while the men were still in pain, Simeon
and Levi killed all the males of Shechem, rescued Dinah, plundered the city,
and took their wives and children captive, vv. 25-29.
III. Revelation: on the spiritual principles seen here
1. Association with ungodly persons easily can lead to wickedness and tragedy:
"Dinah . . . went out to see the daughters of the land," v. 1.
2. Sexual attraction, "true love," and tender feelings are not grounds enough to
bring God's approval upon a marriage between a believer and an unbeliever, v. 3;
II Corinthians 6:14.
3. "The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil," II Timothy 6:10 . . . the men of
Shechem agreed to circumcision motivated by a desire for economic gain. vv. 20-23.
4. Sin always brings judgment and punishment . . . the men of Shechem were killed by
Simeon and Levi; later, Simeon and Levi were cursed by their father, Jacob, because
of their cruelty, vv. 30-31; Genesis 49:5-7.
IV. Applications: as a Christian, I need to . . .
1. Choose my friends and close associates (if possible) from among the people who know
and serve the Lord . . . fellow Christians.
2. Avoid sexual immorality by marrying a spouse who shares my Christian commitment,
I Corinthians 7:2, 9.
3. Know that spiritual considerations and Godly principles are the real "bottom line" . . .
not monetary profits.
4. Live in peace with my enemies (Matthew 6:44), realizing that vengeance belongs to
the Lord, Romans 12:19-21.

One Bride For Seven Brothers
(Matthew 22:1-46)

I. Concentration: on the contents of this chapter
1. Jesus told the parable of the wedding feast, vv. 1-14.
2. Jesus answered the question about paying taxes to Caesar, vv. 15-22.
3. Jesus taught about the resurrection from the dead, vv. 23-33.
4. Jesus discussed the great commandment, and He posed the question about
David's relationship to the Messiah, vv. 34-46.

II. Meditation: on Jesus' teachings about the resurrection (vv. 23-33)
1. The Sadducees posed a trick question to Jesus: "In the resurrection, whose
wife of the seven will she be?" vv. 23-28.
2. Jesus answered: "You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the
power of God," v. 29.
3. Jesus revealed several truths about life in heaven, v. 30.
4. Quoting Moses (Exodus 2), Jesus proved the resurrection by revealing that God is
not the God of the dead, but of the living . . . Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are alive
today, vv. 31-32.

III. Observations: on truths Jesus revealed about life in heaven in Luke's Gospel
1. Heaven is for those who are counted worthy by God, Luke 20:35.
2. In heaven, humans neither marry nor are given in marriage, Luke 20:35.
3. Life in heaven is eternal; persons cannot die anymore, Luke 20:36.
4. Believers are equal to angels . . . sons of God . . . sons of the resurrection,
Luke 20:36. (See also Mark 12:18-27.)

IV. Revelation: on basic Scriptural truths about the resurrection
1. The resurrection is pivotal; without belief in the resurrection of Christ, no salvation or
spiritual discernment is possible, Romans 10:9.
2. Persons who miss experiencing God have two basic problems:
* They don't know the Scriptures, and/or
* They underestimate the power of God, v. 29.
3. Interpersonal relationships in heaven will be different from those on earth.
(How? . . . We do not yet understand.)
4. Spiritually and literally speaking, people live throughout all of eternity . . . either
in heaven or in hell.

V. Applications: as a Christian, I need to . . .
1. Reaffirm my belief and understanding of the resurrection.
2. Carefully study the Scriptures, with faith in God's almighty power.
3. See the difference between existence on earth and in heaven; between the human
and the divine; between the physical and the spiritual realms.
4. Faithfully witness to people about their eternal destination.

The Foundation pays the salaries and benefits of Pillsbury Institute's administration, staff, and faculty members. The Institute is housed at no charge in FreeWay Foundation's spacious modern building on a beautiful 2-acre campus in northwest St. Louis County. Since the overhead costs of the school are minimal, these substantial savings are passed along to the student in the form of lower tuition rates.
