Deliver me and preserve me

(Psalm 140:1-13)

Dr. Curt Scarborough

I.  Concentration:  on David's desperate prayer to God

            1.  Deliver me from evil men, v. 1:

                 1)  Who plan evil things in their hearts, v. 2,

                 2)  Who continually gather together for war, v. 2,

                 3)  Whose tongues are sharpened to bite like a snake, v. 3,

                 4)  Whose gossiping mouths spew deadly poison, v. 3.

            2.  Preserve me from violent men, vv. 1, 4:

                 1)  Who reach out to grab me with wicked intent, v. 4,

                 2)  Who plan to make my steps stumble . . . trip me up, v. 5,

                 3)  Who are filled with arrogance and pride, v. 5,

                 4)  Who set traps to ensnare and place me in captivity, v. 5.

II.  Meditation:  on the curses of God's punishment on such evil, violent men

            1.  The wicked, violent man's desires and schemes will fail, v. 8.

            2.  The wicked, violent persons will be drowned (covered) and judged by their own evil

                 words (speech), v. 9; Matthew 12:36-37.

            3.  The wicked, violent unbelievers will experience "burning coals" (fiery trials) on

earth, and finally they will be cast into hell, v. 10.

            4.  The wicked, violent slanderers' lives will crumble and fall, v. 11.

III.  Revelation:  on David's recitation of God's blessings

            1.  You are my God who hears my supplications, v. 6.

            2.  You are the strength of (power that guarantees) my salvation, and the One Who

                 protects me, v. 7.

            3.  you are the Lord Who maintains (upholds; cares for) the afflicted, and Who gives

justice to the poor, v. 12.

            4.  You are the God Who prepares a dwelling place for Your faithful people in  Your

                 presence, v. 13.

IV.  Applications:  as a Christian, I need to . . .

            1.  List God's blessings upon me, and thank Him for each one.

            2.  Pray for God to deliver and preserve me through times of trouble.

            3.  With compassion, view the ultimate punishment and destruction of the wicked . . .

and witness to them of God's grace and mercy.

            4.  Look forward with joy and gladness to everlasting spiritual communion with the

                 Lord in heaven. .
