Could it be that many of our problems with prayer and much of our weakness in prayer come from the fact that we are not all on active duty, and yet we still try to use the transmitter? We have taken a wartime walkie-talkie and tried to turn it into a civilian intercom to call the servants for another cushion in the den… We see repeatedly in Scripture (Mt. 9:38; Lk. 21:34-36; Rom. 15:30-31; Eph. 6:12, 17-19; Col. 4:3; 2 Thes. 3:1) that prayer is a walkie-talkie for warfare, not a domestic intercom for increasing our conveniences.

Fishing Trip

Two guys go on a fishing trip. They rent all the equipment: the reels, the
rods, the wading suits, the rowboat, the car, and even a cabin in the
woods. They spend a fortune.

The first day they go fishing, but they don't catch anything. The same
thing happens on the second day, and on the third day. It goes on like
this until finally, on the last day of their vacation, one of the men
manges to catch a fish.

As they're driving home they're really depressed. One guy turns to the
other and says, "Do you realize that this one lousy fish we caught cost us
fifteen hundred dollars?"

The other guy says, "Wow! It's a good thing we didn't catch any more!"
