{GEAR} Drum Loops or Machine?

After Norm's clinic and my lesson with him, I've decided I want to use more
than a metronome for practicing. We used Eric Wylie's drum machine for the
clinics and my lesson and it was nice to have those patterns to work with.

So, any recommendations as to whether I should seek out a used drum machine,
or get some software drum loops instead? I keep seeing references to things
like "swing factor" and stuff like that when I read articles about drum
machines. I'm assuming those sorts of "tweaks" might be harder to do with
loops? I'm a total novice with loop stuff, although I do have Acid and
SONAR. TIA.
