[IN DA PLAYA] Unreleased Jaki Byard out!!

Posted by: mbutts <mbutts@...>

One of my favorite cd's is The Jaki Byard Quartet "Live at Lennie's" with
Joe Farrell on tenor, soprano, flute, and drums, George Tucker on bass, and
Alan Dawson on drums and vibes. This came from 2 L.P.'s; Live at Lennies
Vol. 1 & 2. It was always rumored that there was enough for a 3rd LP, and
was confirmed by Jaki before he died, when he said that it wasn't released
because Prestige thought it was too outside, something Jaki deeply disagreed
with.

So, finally released on Prestige: "The Last From Lennie's." Same lineup
although Alan stays on drums on all of these cuts. Everything was previously
unmissed except for the "Jaki Byard's Ballad Medley", which was left off of
the cd to make both LP's fit in a single cd.

This one is just as exciting as the other cd. Horribly out of tune piano,
but it still works on this. Jaki is at his best, playing everything from
barrelhouse stride style to swinging blues to outside. George Tucker just
amazes me on this. His solos are really modern and show that he died way too
young. He had huge ears, and his arco and pizz solos are worthy of
transcription when I get around to it. I always knew Joe Farrell as a
swinging flute player, but his tenor playing is excellent throughout .

This has a loose feel as the band effortlessly segues right into other
tunes. You can tell they were really jacked up about something as it has
some of the best live playing I've ever heard.
