long distance

Posted by: jburkholder <jburkholder@...>

This is a copy of a letter that I got from a friend. This somehow doesn't
sound right to me, but if it is, how does a something on your phone line
prevent long distance charges to your phone. What is you try to reverse
the charges or call and have it billed to your home number. Where would
this thing go, because as I see it, it would have to be connected to
where your phone line comes into the house.
Anyone know anything about this and if it is actually true?

I know this might sound silly, but I'll share anyhow. If any of you have
dial-up access, please go buy the doo-hickey that prevents long-distance
charges from being made through your line. In French it's called a
*dispositif.* Why do I know this?? Long story. Bottom line is that we
used to have dial-up, and this fraudulent website somehow hacked into our
phone line, and proceeded to connect us at random, thereby creating many
long-distance charges on our phone bill. The phone company passed the buck
to the internet server, who prompty passed it right back - leaving me with
these fraudulent charges. When the technician came to change us to cable
modem (which was supposed to put an end to this mess), he made the necessary
changes on the computer, but never removed the jack that connected the phone
to the computer. We continued having the charges. The Bell specialist
department told me to remove the jack and I shouldn't have any more charges.

Lesson to be learned? Get cable modem access or buy the doo-hickey to
protect yourself!
