[MUSIC] "Quality" bands / albums

Posted by: famkan <famkan@...>

Hey'all,

I've recently been spending a lot of time on my computer at home, and have been rating the music in my collection. FWIW, yes I'm using Windows Media Player (on Win2K, so it doesn't have a lot of the WinXP features). The rating is on 1-5 star basis. the more the better. (They give them descriptions too - hate it, Ok, Like It, Really like it, Love it)

The point is that I've noticed that there are some albums that I will rate most songs in the 4-5 range, with maybe a three, or possibly a 2. Others will be mostly 2 or 3, or even 1, with the odd highlight (a 4 or 5) thrown in, mostly in the first few tracks. This could apply to albums, or even to artists. (Norm comes to mind - mostly 4 and 5! 😉 It even applies across the genres: classical, jazz, pop, rock etc.

I was wondering if others had also found this to be true. I think its indicative of my taste (genre enjoyment), but possibly also of some sort of quality rating overall. Am I buying into the marketing effects? I don't think so. Stevie Wonder is, for me, all over the shop. Plus he's impossible to classify genre wise. I've even considered making him his own genre!
