[NBC] holiday? oh really?

Posted by: bandaddie <bandaddie@...>

Just out of curiousity, and not meaning harm (really, I mean it) how do your
churches and/or families, treat halloween?

Our church is having a "children's festival" sans costumes and any sort of
monster decor. Other churches here are having costume parties and such, and
a couple are doing haunted stuff.

My first halloween in the USA was interesting. There came a knock on the
door, my father opened it and there were many people in masks yelling at us.
He chased them off, swinging a large stick. I was rather frightened. The
next day, when police came to see all the damage to our home and car, did we
get told about it all.

Frankly, i have never had any interest in it, though I did get asked one
year to play a monster in a "haunted house" which, oddly enough, was built
inside the largest Methodist Church in Northern Virginia. I had been playing
the hunchback, Quasimodo, at the community theater, so it was a natural ease
into it. Can you imagine the thoughts of a Moslim witnessing halloween in a
christian church? dazed and confused, and maybe even laughing at them.

I will find somewhere to take my babies, because last year I had to stay
home, and the kids who knocked on our door scared poor little ZuZu to death.
Tara would freak out too, this year, big time. We'll lock up, douse the
lights and go to church party. The girls love pumpkins. Big orange natural
play balls, who would not love such a thing?

There was never a time when any of the standard "Christian" holidays meant
much to me, and even now I find myself at a loss to explain them to my
little ones. We do not have any sort of family tradition built around any of
them. I am thinking, maybe this should change, but I am lost on the matter.
Even Christmas leaves me chilly...

Korban Bayram i understand and can explain. I can talk for hours of what my
parents did with us on such festivals. Even Passover means more to me.

Thanksgiving? Now that we understand. We do that at every meal.
