{PRAYER} Death in the "family"

Posted by: rdo <rdo@...>

Evan Jeter, a long-time resident of the Hospitality House (homeless
shelter where I live and work) passed away in his sleep last night. I
believe he was in his late fifties or early sixties.

I believe Evan was a Christian. Though his brain was damaged from years
of heavy drug use in his younger days and most of the time it was
difficult to figure out what he was talking about, Evan faithfully
attended every Bible study and church service held at the mission for the
last several years.

Before Evan became a resident several years ago, he lived on the street.
He came in to eat meals each day, and when volunteers were requested to
wash dishes, Evan always volunteered. A staff member eventually suggested
that he move into the mission. It was clear that Evan really enjoyed
washing dishes, and he cheerfully became the full-time dishwasher. I've
been a cook here, and I can tell you that Evan was the most meticulous
worker I've ever seen. A few years ago, Evan switched from washing dishes
to doing general cleaning around the mission. As with his dishwashing, he
was meticulous in his new work. But he didn't just clean. He took up
painting around the mission, making dingy old painted surfaces like
doors, door frames and window frames like-new. He painted our out-
buildings as well.

Evan almost always had a smile on his face, and everybody liked him. Evan
may have been homeless, but he was not a bum. He had a heart for service.
He will be missed by all of us at Hospitality House.
