RE: Word for Today, Tue, 4, Sep 2001: The Holy Spirit Impresses Reality

Posted by: jmanhood <jmanhood@...>

You asked if anyone else struggled with knowing when and how to confront
someone who is not doing right. It is hard for me to know how and when to
confront someone when I know they are not doing right. I don't like
confrontation and I certainly don't want someone to think that I am any
better than they are. But it is something that we need to learn how to do
effectively so I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide me to do the right
thing at the right time. Other than that if anyone has any suggestions on
how to handle these type situations. Knowing what Paul said or did is great
but how do you translate that into the current situation effectively?
lots of love,

Impresses Reality

Dear friends,

Yesterday I forwarded you a message that used an analogy with
children to think about how we might consider treating one
another. It is never easy or immediately obvious whether, when
confronted with situations where something is not right, whether
or not it is appropriate to "correct" another person. It is very
easy to come off being "self righteous" and offensive to others
when we do that, and often that is an accurate perception.

I like the way the apostle Paul approaches situations when
dealing with those who have a different view. He does not
attempt to persuade or dissuade others. Instead, he shares the
scriptures, clearly and concisely, then he allows "the Holy
Scripture to impress the reality and truth of the words upon
you."

I have to tell you, I struggle with this. I want others to know
the truth of the Gospel. Sometimes I fail to say anything at
all, which is of no help whatsoever. Other times, I say far too
much, failing to allow the scriptures or the Holy Spirit of God
to have their impact. How I want to do the right thing! How I
want others to know Christ! So I continue to study, learn,
read and listen to the teachings of others, and seek the Lord,
that He may lead me where He wants me to go.

Am I the only one who struggles with this? Perhaps not. I just
know that for me, personally, I have such a strong conviction
about my faith that I yearn NOT to get in God's way, yet I would
like to mature enough that God could possibly use me effectively
in some way.

I pray that God will continue to work in my life so that I will
be ready to be obedient to Him at all times, and to meet Him when
He calls me. I don't want to force that upon anyone else, but I
would sure love to see others know the God that I love so much!
My God loves me enough that He is patient with me, even as I
fumble in my faith. I know He loves each of us in a similar, and
yet unique manner, for each of us is His special workmanship.
Each of us is special, and each of us matter greatly to God.

Your Brother in Christ,
Brian

BIBLE READING

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

OVERVIEW
The message of the Gospel must be applied by the Holy
Spirit.

INSIGHT
Paul was a scholar and an orator. He could have come to
the Corinthians with "excellence of speech or of wisdom''
(v. 1), but he did not.

He knew that one mind reaches only another mind. Paul
says, in effect, "I made no attempt to persuade you with
logic or oratory. I merely told you the simple facts
about the Gospel of Christ and let the Holy Spirit
impress the reality and truth of the words upon you."

Paul did not want them to be persuaded by men because
they might be dissuaded by men. If they were persuaded by
God, then the persuasion would hold.

God wants you to "be ready to give a defense to everyone
who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you" (1
Peter 3:15). We must understand that it is God who
persuades the unbelieving heart to believe. In preparing
for our ministries, we must pray as well as study.

PRAYER

* Consider how perfectly the Lord Jesus Christ models
wisdom for us, and praise Him for His example:

Let my mouth be filled with Your praise
And with Your glory all the day...
I will hope continually,
And will praise You yet more and more.
My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness And Your
salvation all the day,
For I do not know their limits.
I will go in the strength of the Lord God;
I will make mention of Your righteousness,
of Yours only (Psalm 71:8,14-16).

* Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your
life free from sin and in fellowship with Him:

Forgive us, Lord, when we are unmindful of
You, the Rock who begot us,
And forget You, the God who fathered us (based on
Deuteronomy 32:18).

* Confess any personal sins that the Holy Spirit
brings to your mind. As you agree with God's will,
voice your affirmation of His Word:

I will instruct you and teach you in the way
you should go;
I will guide you with My eye (Psalm 32:8).

* As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray
for:

* sensitivity to sin,
* the ministry of your church,
* the concerns of your heart.

* Offer this prayer of worship to the Lord:

Let the words of my mouth and the
meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer (Psalm 19:14).
