Let me suggest you get a stacked humbucker jazz style pickup so you don't
have to Franken the bass. A friend of mine did this using a Carvin H50N
pickup for $55. The Carvin is 3.72" long good for string spacing up to 3.3"
works active or passive. I have Barts in my Jazz and really like them.

Do you like the sound of your existing pickup? What about adding a dummy
coil under the pickguard? I have seen it done, but I'm not exactly sure
how to pull it off.
