I've found the opposite - taper wound strings have given
me a better (more consistent and tuneable) B string than
non-taper wound ones. I think the relative mass and
rigidity of the low B means that it has problem conforming
to the theoretical ideal.

Maybe some of it depends on the other characteristics of
both the string and the bass? I've been happy with them
(and haven't had the breakage problems Rik
<rdo@phase42.net> mentioned either). I can only begin
to imagine the hassle of going down to low F#!
