Well, I tune my four-string D-A-D-G so playing songs down in D or Eb on
a four-string isn't a problem. Nevertheless, I also play a six-string
and to me the advantage of having extra strings is not really in just
the extra range but in the way it compacts the area you have to cover.
With a six string bass I can cover a lot of range just between the 5th
and 12th frets.

But I think I'm alone in my opinion that a 5-string bass is a bad
comprimse between 4 and 6 🙂
