RE: [special music] Creator...[reply]

Posted by: cwstairs <cwstairs@...>

As a member of a Presbyterian Church [and self appointed domestic
missionary to the PCUSA] I am constantly faced with the notion that
"emotion is bad." Balderdash! Is only Christ allowed to get ticked and
run off the moneychangers with a whip? Anyway, can someone enlighten me
as to the source of thought which teaches that we are to proceed only by
intellect? Why do many of my fellow Presbyterians disdain emotion in
worship? (Luckily I'm on a team that is blatantly emotional, by
comparison) Is there a Biblical basis for denying the emotional part of
who we are?

is passing. They needn't accept lesser standards from the rising
vanguard, but they must understand that there will always be different
methods and varied means in expressing praise and worship to the Lord."

It's a great song about being completely devoted to someone you love,
something that seems to be lost on a lot of people over the last several
decades. It's a good topic; why not sing about it?

The Bible commentary I have on John's epistles make it very clear that
the
term "the world" does not refer to this physical world. It refers to
the
unbelievers. The idea is that we are to evangelize to the unbelievers
("in the world") but not subscribe to their ideas ("not of it"). It
doesn't mean that we aren't to be concerned about what is going on
around
us, or deny our human emotions.

We are human beings, existing as a part of God's physical creation. We
notice things. We feel things. We think about things. There's no
reason
that we shouldn't express those observations, feelings, and thoughts.
Every song by a Christian band doesn't *have* to be specifically about
God. We experience love for other humans, so we should sing about that
if
we want to. We get upset over how some people treat other people, so we
should sing about that if we want to.

Musicians are humans. We need to express human emotions.

Peace,
Doug
