Basically - all the modes relate back to the major or minor scale of the key
you're in. Keep your brain in the key of G even if you play a pattern
starting and ending on C (Lydian). And realize that the modes are like
colors... the C Lydian has its own color but you're still in G... also think
melody!! don't think modes. Good melodies rarely sound like modes. Good
solos rarely sound like modes.

Nevertheless learning and practicing modes is a really good ear training
excercise, and great for your muscle memory and for learning to get around
the neck in different ways. You are increasing your vocabulary as you play
in the key of G starting or ending on F# or E or C... you're still in G but
you have more ways to say it than 1 2 3 4 5 4 3 2 1.
