Most of the Spectors with 18v pre-amps, primarily the neck-thrus, have EQ's
which need new world views. When they are turned all the way down, they are
not LOW. They are actually at the same level as other types of EQ's when
those controls are set at mid-point or "FLAT". This means you are not taking
away EQ, only adding. Post modern neanderthals, such as I, require more time
in the learning curve to realize just how much power comes out of there and
how much noise and dirstortion can be had with the wrong or damaged drivers
and amps. This really becomes an issue when I DI. EQing the way I would with
other basses sends a signal too hot to handle.

Most of the time now, I am playing with my EQ's at lowest level, the neck
pickups just on, and the bridge pickups fairly hot, to let the amps do the
work. When we need to go up to "11", only then will I turn up EQs, and the
neck pickups get cranked. Neck pickup off completely, and bridge only half
hot, EQ's down all flat, then bass just up a tiny notch, gives me the
accustic sound I need with the bluegrass band.

Due to my playing on a regular basis in 3 very differant bands, I am looking
into thinking about getting a Euro5, so i can make the transitions easier
from D to E tuning and such, without having to lug around 2 beasties and
fiddle with re-tuning so much. Target date for that purchase is Winter 2004,
If I ever get off the fence about it. Mrs. B down loaded a photo of the next
bass she wants to buy me from Musician's Friend; It turned out to be a black
cherry Euro5. She was watching a MEATLOAF concert on DVD and saw the bassist
playing one. She inquired on line about it and made her choice.

This may actually happen.........

Two gentlemen nearby have called and asked if I could give them bass
lessons. They told me if I can do it, so can they. Both lost body parts in
war and are deciding to live again. I taught them open ocean kayaking, where
they are completely free and mobile again. Going down into the water and up
again makes us all equals, no matter how bent our bodies. I am online now
looking for teaching resources. I want to make certain no one learns my poor
fingering techniques.

Kind of got off track. I canceled out much distortion by re-thinking my EQ.
Thats all I really wanted to say.
